What time of day to hens lay?

To encourage them to lay in the nests once they are ready, you can start by putting a golf ball in one or two nests now! That way, when they're ready, they'll be more likely to use the boxes instead of the yard.

My girls lay any time between sun-up and sun-down. I go out every evening to lock the run door and bring in the eggs. I hear them throughout the day sing their "I just laid the most precious egg in the world" song.

2nd the golf ball thing! It works, odd but it does! Deff give them some time to adjust and get used to the environment, they will soon give you some nice eggs.

My girls lay at different times during the day. It is actually kind of funny watching them. One will be in the coop do her thing, then she'll come out find the others, and another will go in and take her turn. Almost like tag!

My girls tend to wait in line to lay, three at a time, with the fourth laying very late in the day to early evening after they are in their coop. Each girls cycle is a bit different with the NHR laying precisely every 25 hours and the Austra laying at about 28.
