What an informative and inspiring thread! Fantastic of you to care for these chooks. I admit, I skipped to the end for the after photos (amazing, btw), but went back and read all the great advice and care provided. That chicken owes you. She should be providing you with mealworms or some other treat you might actually enjoy.

That looks so amazing Kris compared to the first pictures. Hope your foot is feeling better. It sounds like you are very isolated.

Tippie is doing very well, feet are all happy as can be, considering where we started. She hasn’t laid any more lash eggs, and I think the Baytril has really helped her with them (she’s going to have a decent retirement, for as long as possible).

She now has two roommates, Puffy (I haven’t culled her) and B***hy (I caught her condition earlier) who both seem to have ascites or some other reproductive issue that is causing bloating and vent leakage, but are improving with the Baytril. No more leakage, normal poops, bloating is diminishing... they are both due for baths again now that we have warmer temps again. None of the three are laying.

My ankle is doing better, it wasn’t a break, and I’m walking almost normally and can wear shoes again. This type of sprain is actually worse for recovery than a break according to the 2 Dr’s I’ve seen. I took almost a week off of most of my chores because of it. The cows stare at you funny when you walk with a cane, and it makes hauling hay pretty much impossible!

I’ll see if we can get some pictures tomorrow of the girls. Thanks for all your advice, help, and concern. This is such an amazing community, and I am very grateful to be here.

What and amazing progression! Kris you have worked an miracle.

I am reminded of an old story that when a human reached the gates of Heaven to be judged, of all the creatures of the world, only the dog spoke up in the human's defense. Well in your case there better be at least one very sincere hen singing your praises with the other hens joining in on the chorus.

Sorry I didn’t get these up yesterday, we had a crisis with two of our dogs... I’ve mentioned trespassers, hikers, and tourists before a few times; our property borders with federal parkland which has a difficult and in places unmarked trail along it. Those who hike out to the beach almost never take it back they just use our road through our property instead. Well, two of our pure bred working boarder collies decided to follow a pair of hikers and were missing for 5 hours. They are back now, but it was distressing, and everyone on the farm got lots of unintentional hiking in, in not appropriate footwear or clothing for it!

And she will stand, and walk normally now, I even have issues getting her out of her crate.

Here is her roommate Puffy, doing much better... once the weather improves I’m going to work more on her feet. And hit them all with the ivermectin. She isn’t near as swollen as she was initially so I think the Baytril is working somewhat. I’m still prepared to cull if her quality of life starts deteriorating again. But fingers crossed for her.
