Ok I think I just had the same thing happen- my humidity went up to 85% for just a little while i think day 19 but it must have been at a critical time I had 17 eggs got only six that hatched first one out had bloody bottom -still had yolk sac attached- it died- last one pipped wednesday(19) had to help it out yesterday day 21-it has splayed legs- we put them together.

All 17 were developed to about day 19 by looking at some pictures on the net. How do you get the humidity down when it spikes like that?

Temp in the bator didnt flux but a few tenths the whole time? I hope I'm not taking over someones thread but I got on here to find out why and it was exactly the problem I had to! Why did six hatch and the rest die if they drowned in the shell? This has bee one horrible week for us here -Death week - dog got ran over Monday, Jersey heifer died Wednesday, now 11 chicks don't make it out of the shell

Makes me want to crawl in a hole and give up! :thun

OHbluecoop sorry to hear about your dog and the jersey and chicks

after thinking about what people said and all I know that my incubator has more vent holes than my hatcher so that is what I am going to do-----this is my second "try" the first one didnt go so well either but it was in the incubator and I hatched 4 chicks but 2 died ( they burnt up in the bator because I thought I was supposed to leave them in for a day and it was too hot) and I had ALL the vent holes open and still kept humidity up BUT (I kept the vents open) WIDE!!! Being this was only the second time around I forgot this detail....It also seems very important to have a balance of humidity, high but not too high. I think I am going to stay closer to 60% next time instead of aiming for 70%.from day 18 on. I do believe the weather may have had something to do with the humidity spike.
when I transferred my eggs to the hatcher it may have been a sudden change
also the part about low humidity and temp from days 0-18, my humidity was closer to 20% most of the time and my temp was 99.5-99.1 so I want to raise those up a bit

OHbluecoop How were your temp and Hum the 0-18 days?

Thanks for the good wishes Smittys, equine chick and TuffOldHen

So sorry tiki-the same sort of thing happened to me. Fine on day 18-dead a few days later. Try again, and I'm sure you'll have a better hatch next time.

Tiki, So sorry to hear about your hatching. I am not quite getting your setup. Are you removing the eggs and putting them in something else the last three days? Why are you not leaving them in the bator or is that not possible?

I incubate and hatch in the same unit. That could be the problem. The hatcher that you are putting the eggs in the last three days, I am sure you set for proper heat and humidity, but as soon as you put eggs in everything starts changing because you added eggs. It is just like when I start my bator before I add eggs, the temp and humidity are running perfect for days. Then I add the eggs and everything changes and everything has to be reset, but it is at the beginning of the hatch, not the end when things are more sensitive to changes. I hope this makes sense! Just keep trying, I am sure things will get better.

HHHMMM thanks 4H Chicken mom I didnt think of that. well I have heard of other people using hatchers. And I have eggs that have several different hatch dates due to some uncontrolled circumstances, but right now I can leave the orps where they are at and move my other eggs to the hatcher/incubator seeing how they are 5 days along. Thanks and thanks to you too coffee girl

this was just my second hatch- and they were welsummers from mother goose and I was so excited that they were all moving on day 14 when i candled. I had the humidity around 60% day 1-18 because i had 4 goose eggs in there too. My first hatch in Jan. I had to help 4or 5 of 15 out of the shell and i thought it was because the humid. fluxed and went a like in the 30's my first hatch so I'm still learning. Somtimes the more I know the less I know. I hatched them in my hova and put the goose eggs in the LG still air while the chickens hatched- I cleaned out the hova today and put the goose eggs back in -it is day 25 I candled and 3 of the 4 were moving, i think the 4th is pretty clear but I didnt take it out
