I had a bunch in this hatch. I don't know why.
I'm thinking about setting up a pen with my NN roo and my crossbred/ee hens.

Ray_n_Debi - cannot imagine shipping would cause them to spoil so fast

Were they extremely pourous? That is odd and does lead you to believe they were pretty old. I leave my eggs out for weeks and never have any spoil.

ItsieBitsie, if you are lurking....what are your frizzles a mix of? LOL I got a cute chick with 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other. His skin is yellow and beak also. Must be a silkie in there somewhere! So far 2 friz and one gorgeous black silkie hatched. I'm beside myself excited for the black silkie. As it was hatching, I had my nose pressed to the window begging it to be black.

So today when I was messing around in the chicken coop, I inspected a hen and found lice and possibly mites on her! YUCK! I've started another thread here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=7787121#p7787121

If anyone has any ideas for me, please let me know. I'm totally grossed out. I think they could have come from the straw that my hubs brought home last week. We've never had this kind of problem. I've always used shredded paper or wood shavings.

Poultry dust. I give my girls diatomaceous earth, poultry dust and sand in their cat litter pan dust bath. Gets rid of nasties. If you have a lot, you might have to treat the whole coop.

Yep, poultry dust. I put it in an old spice shaker and shake it everywhere at least once a week. Every nest, the roosts and the floor. If a chicken walks by they get a shake too. Don't forget the dust bath area too. Mine free range but I know their fav dust place so I cover it too. Someone suggested putting the dust in a panty hose and patting the birds with that. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I found one of those glass and metal shakers for parmesan cheese, it's bigger so it doesn't need to be refilled as often. Goodwill has a treasure trove of stuff like that.

I owe three items going out monday. Friday I got sick on my celebration lunch and the PO I went to Saturday has their hours listed online wrong. I hope they all don't start cutting hours.

If you get the mites that make their feet dry and scaly looking you can moisturize the toesies with baby oil, coconut oil, and silicone cooking spray are some options I've read. I spray with olive oil once a week.

Ray-Debi... Yes I have gotten rotten eggs. IF the package/eggs are sitting somewhere & get to hot they can rot, but this time of year, I would guess old eggs.

I don't know why or what ? I did not do anything different.... only 1/2 or less hatched.

Emvickery... I got 4/11 sizzles & 4/5 BBS Silkies. The Silkies were the winners this time around.

1 Am zipped & quit...thats it.

I also had one of my EE eggs zip & quit. Not too wet, not too dry, just quit.... Hatcher had been cleaned, disinfected and resting for a few weeks. I have 10 buff silkie eggs in there now

I saw positive movement in 9 of them last night when I set them.

The unhatched eggs have been moved to the hatching tray of the cabinet....just in case.
