Whats in your garden?

We have a vegetable garden. I am an awful farmer. Admittedly i seem to be learning something new each year. This year i did some soil prep, added some fertilizer and still it seems a few months kater and not much is growing, things are getting yellow. We have green beans, okra, squash, corn, kale, tomatoes, and wax and lima beans as well. Everything did well for a while, but just as things began to produce it seemed to fizzle out and many leaves got yellow. Doesnt make much sense to me as ive been feeding weekly with a healthy dose of fish fertilizer. The tomatoes, green beans, kale, and okra seem to be doing alright.

Theres a fellow down the road who planted later than i did and it seems his garden looks 3 times better than mine! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I dont know about the others, but tomatoes only need watering with fertalizer now and then just to get a few ripe tomatoes.

You might be over fertilizing... I augment my soil at the start of the season with some really nice amendment mix from a local garden store and that's it. Next year I should have enough compost to add that in as well. My mother in law commented that my plants are about 3x as big as hers, as I gave her some tomatoes that I sprouted from seed so we have a good side-by-side comparison by looking at hers versus mine, so a big part of that is the soil (her garden beds are new but she admits it was filled with "cheap soil").

Not sure how well you know the "fellow down the road" but if you see him out gardening, maybe stop by and have a chat with him and ask what he does with his soil before planting. Maybe he can recommend some products that work in your area.

Thanks for the tips! Prior to plantong i did a ph test and all looked well. A "fertility" test showed well also. Ive thought the same as to stopping by and asking what i may be doing wrong here. My corn only got about 3 feet tall, and ears only filled in about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom. Im sure eventually ill figure things out. All of this is an experiment to see how much of our annual food supply i can realistically grow. The only things i seem to be decent at growing are beans, kale, tomatoes and potatoes! Lol!

For work I manage a garden center, so sometimes it feels like all I do is rescue sad plants. Our house had been neglected for a number of years and a long time ago someone had a lot of flower beds. I've been working my way through them!

The green ground cover coming over the bricks is like chicken candy, when it spreads too far it pulls up easy and I feed it to them. Pretty sure it's a type of sedum, it came with the property so it didn't have an ID tag.

Last summer I rescued 6 varieties of hardy Hibiscus and devoted a bed to them. They all came back this year! Anxiously awaiting their blooms! Tried to kill off the yucca but it came back with a vengeance. It's going to bloom this year. Did some reading on Yucca, apparently there's medicinal properties to it. One of my pigs was going into labor and when she was nesting, she specifically dug up a yucca and took the root to her nest. I figured she knew something I didn't! Apparently it's an anti-inflammatory among other things.

Interesting. How do you keep your chickens outta your garden??? I cant seem to figure it out, their making a mess outta my mom's hostas.

It is a hardy plant,,,,, and I have one. Actually a group of them in a few square foot area. Had it for about 35 years. I get one or two blooms each year. When that bloom passes, that part of plant also passes. I then see new sprouts come up from the roots. Those are the ones that will bloom in a year or two.
I heard from others that it is an invasive plant and can take over the area. It has not been the case for me since I had a group of them growing for 35 years, and it has not spread out from my intended area.
Killing one in not all that difficult if one tries intensely. I really suggest you keep yours. They are evergreen and cold and hot hardy. Do not need to be regularly watered like many other plants. If neglected, they still thrive.
The BUCK THORN plant which is sometimes called "The plant from 7734" is a difficult one to control. It is a nice looking shrub that has berry type fruit that birds do eat. One way that it is spread. If in small amounts, cutting of the growth and digging up some of the roots does stop it. If it grows thick like an acre coverage, well,,,,,,,,, then it does pose a CHALLENGE.
BTW Mandelyn, really like the way your garden beds are arranged. My DD also rescues plants that end up on clearance at Lowes.:thumbsup
And I rescue cats, see my Avatar. Have one a perfect clone of the one in your pix:love

I have a few to share. :D

An experiment in getting strawberries off the ground. I had to chase a squirrel off it today. :hmm

My project of the last 2 weeks. I started with weedy ground. My pond is not quite finished but it's getting there.
