Victorians urged to prepare for wild weather and potential fires this weekend

Victorians are being warned to prepare for wild weather and potential fires this weekend with hot, dry and windy conditions expected, followed by storms.

Total fire bans have been declared for the Mallee, Wimmera, North Central, South West and Central regions on Saturday.

That means, across the whole day, no fire can be lit in the open air or allowed to remain alight.

Emergency services said Saturday's conditions would drive elevated fire danger across Victoria for most of the day and into Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to reach the low 40s in the state's north west, including at Mildura, Swan Hill and Ouyen, with mid 30s expected elsewhere.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said there would be extreme fire danger in much of western and central Victoria on Saturday.

"Across the state we are looking at temperatures of 6 to 12 degrees [Celsius] above average," he said.

Dry lightning risk

Mr Narramore said fresh and gusty winds were expected to pick up through the morning, particularly in western and central parts of the state.

He said a cold front would impact western parts of Victoria on Saturday night and Sunday morning before moving across the rest of the state.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Mr Narramore said it was important locals kept an eye on weather warnings.

"We could see dry lightning ignite new fires as we move later today into tonight," he said.

"Definitely watch out for those."

Mr Narramore said temperatures would generally drop by around 10C for most areas on Sunday.

Winds could reach 100kph

The Country Fire Authority's chief officer Jason Heffernan said the return of hot, northerly winds on Saturday would present a challenge to firefighters if fires did start.

He said the weather event this weekend was unusual.

"Ordinarily we would see a frontal system move things, the fire dangers would drop a bit, temperatures will cool and everything will return back to normal," he said.

But unfortunately what we are going to experience … is a bit of a 36-hour event where overnight those fire conditions will continue.

"In fact, wind strengths will increase to a potential … 100 kilometres an hour in elevated regions."

Mr Heffernan said that would bring some fire potential for parts of the state, particularly the central ranges.

"As we lead into Sunday morning we will see increased elevated fire danger in the north-east of [the] state," he said.

He said locals should also expect thunderstorm activity.

"Firefighters and emergency services are really starting to prepare right across the state, particularly in those areas that are in a total fire ban," he said.
