just don't hold your breath!

I think it's only been below Zero here in West Central Maine this winter so far. Supposed to be -9 - -12 Friday or Saturday night or both. I have base heater in the coop. I know don't feed or water in coop. The big container of water is totally frozen. But the big trough had a skim of ice a couple of time. I can tell how cold it was over night because I leave an Arizona Ice Tea gallon jug covered in the coop and it's only been frozen a couple of times. Just bust out the trough and get a warm jug from base heater out side and top of trough. That gallon jug is a nice thermometer. And most days it hasn't frozen during the day. I have a shed coop and open the big doors during the day when the sun is out and above 20F. The coop is 10x12 16 adult chickens. Wyandottes. Buffs Leghorns RIR and Barred Rocks I gave away 3 Big Buffs as I don't think they are laying. The guy I gave them to is going watch them into spring and see if they lay. I think they are older. My leghorns are quite small but all five lay every day or every other. Jumbos 70-

One had a prolapsed vent. Good a good sized metal dog kennel, put down a nice thick rug perfect size and then a bowl of water, and pine shaving. Had a large piece of fleece, covered the whole kennel to stop laying and keep warm during the day. Put here to roost at nice to help with healing got some nice BIG birds.

Leghorns lay jumbo 70-78. That bird laid 2days in a row with that prolapse. I clean her bum in my tub. Dried her butt cut some feathers around that area put some coconut oil on the prolapsed vent and pushed it back in. 3 Days and she was fine. That was 3-4 weeks ago. I did get one blood streaks egg that 4th day but none since and no further prolapse. I have one brown layer who lets and big squawk out just as her egg come out. That's a jumbo.
