What's the temperature where you are???

Texas 12:20am temp 84, heat index 90 (we hit 102 today w 109 heat index) and humidity is 56%. Can you say yuck?! Had to bring 2 pullets into the house. They just were not going to make it otherwise and we even hosed down the run for them. The others found much joy in playing in the cool mud though! LoL
Same situations at my house. I watch my chicks-pullets at 13 weeks now every hour it seems to see if I’m going to need to bring them in the house. They have made it outside in the worst of the heat that could be thrown at them I feel like though and as they have been tested they have passed and succeeded well in this terrible heat. Our temps have gone as high as 113 I believe with heat indices in the shade being very high as up to 106 or more. That is awful. I have misted my pullets with the water hose and they didn’t like it but they got it anyway because they needed and got over being mad at Mama. I also spray their run area every day where they like to dig down a cool moist spot to lay in and nap when it’s hot in the afternoons. They get so comfortable in this particular spot I have lost them on my chick cam because they have actually turned upside down in their. They are so funny looking laying upside down asleep in the cool dirt! Crazy chickens. One of them is always on guard duty though while the rest are napping upside down though. Too funny. The heat this summer has been one to remember. I have lived in MS all my life so I have seen all of them but a few as really hot but this one and las year take the cake on many of them. This year especially. Y’all take care in it.

Thank you, and you take care too. Storms came thru last night, lots of rain and woke up to 77 degrees, what a relief! Gonna be muggy later though, supposed to be 99. But I will take that over 106 again like yesterday.

High of 99 today and 103 tomorrow. Luckily I'll be working from home, so will need to keep an eye on all the chickens and chicks. I let them free range, too, so am extra careful to keep an eye on them. It must be so hard for them in this heat.
It's hard enough on me just going outside for 30 minutes to add ice to their water, hose them and the run down, and observe them. I can't even imagine how they feel. We also are using a plastic dish pan I got at dollar tree, put bricks in it, fill with cold water until it just covers the bricks. They love standing in it until they stop panting then go back to playing.

Aw... feeling for you and your chickens! We do that too to keep them cool. Because our chicks are only 8 weeks old, we're still anxious about leaving them out in the yard, so I've been working from home in a hot sunroom to keep an eye on them 😓 Hope the weather in Texas cools off soon.

Me too! I had two days where they would breathe with open mouths many times most of the afternoon times and I was very worried but they would still sleep close together and I figured if they were desperately hot they would be fanning their wings out more and trying to space themselves out more from one another to get some air space. The nights here have not been terribly bad for MS except for about the one week worth. It has been hot but not so hot that it’s unbearable for chickens. They have been stoic. I am very proud of my girls and how they have made it through their first summer and it being probably one of the worst one on record. I hope this turn towards cooler weather keeps going. My husband thinks we are going to have a bad winter. He says it’s overdue in the South. We had one 6 years ago in 2014. It was no fall for us. October blew in cold as a January North wind and it was freeze warning before our first football game which is very weird here in the South. Gardens froze with fruit still on the vines. Awful. I’m not looking forward to it. Will be bad for the pandemic situation I’m afraid. Not glad to think in those lines. No way

I think you are right also, going to be an early fall and long cold winter here in Texas. They project our first freeze to be early November. I've been canning and freezing a lot of produce! LoL Got to have my fruits and vegetables, we all have eggs at the very least for protein, after all. 👍

Yes me too. Trying to put up what vegetables and meats we can in the freezer. Just hoping it doesn’t go out. It’s acting kind of wonky. Got plenty of corn, tomatoes, peas, squash, butter beans, and chicken- from Dinnerly - that we ordered and didn’t eat but froze. Long story but we have enough to last the winter so I won’t be touching one of my hens no way in case anyone ever got any bright ideas around here. They are not for eating. No way! They are for eggs only and petting.
