Roleystone residents wake to trail of destruction after severe thunderstorm hits Perth's south-east​

A severe thunderstorm, which locals have described as like a "tornado", has left a trail of destruction across Roleystone in Perth's south-east after hitting in the middle of the night.

Resident Peta Carrigan, who lives on Hawkstone Road, was woken about 12.30am to what she described as a "terrifying" experience.

"[It was] the most horrendous noise, loud, loud noise of wind, followed very shortly by crashing of trees," she told ABC Radio Perth.

"We all just jumped out of bed, it was pitch black.

"When I looked out the back door … our flat-roof pergola had been completely peeled back, gone backwards over the roof and landed in the neighbour's property behind us.

"Huge trees down … our carport's been damaged and my daughter's got a piece of carport through the windscreen of her car.

"We have leaks in three rooms in the house.

"But I think it's just looking outside as much as anything, at the trees that are down everywhere.

"It's just surreal, it's like an apocalypse for us."

Ms Carrigan, who said the damage to her suburb was confined to a relatively small area, was convinced the storm was a tornado.

"We live here in the hills, we're used to storms coming through, we know what they're like. But this was definitely different," she said.

Cherry farm struck​

Linda Moore, whose sister owns cherry producer Irymple Orchard, was also adamant the storm was a tornado.

"It was a roaring sound, we had huge, really heavy rain," she said.

"The tornado has gone through our packing shed.

"It's just cut a really narrow path through Roleystone, it's pretty impressive. You can see a trail of where it's hit trees.

"A huge tree has come down over the main drive."

Was it a tornado?​

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said it had no "direct evidence" a tornado hit the area.

The BOM did issue severe thunderstorm warnings for heavy rainfall for parts of Perth from 10.25pm on Monday night.

"Radar imagery does show some thunderstorms moving through the Roleystone area at around midnight," the BOM told the ABC.

"Many severe thunderstorms carry with them a slight chance of tornado development.

"Predicting tornadoes is difficult and specific warnings are only issued if signs consistent with tornadoes occurring are visible on radar or direct observations are received."

The City of Armadale's administration building front counter was closed for the day due to flooding, and local school Roleystone Community College was also closed with no power.

At the storm's peak, just under 2,000 properties in Roleystone and Martin were left without power.

At 11.30am on Tuesday, there were 254 residents in Roleystone with no power, with an estimated restoration time of 1pm.
