What's this? (Pictures)

Yay!! So excited for you!! I had two pip the wrong end and side in my last hatch. One hatched all my himself and the other I had to help. I waited 24 + hours and slowly started to make a zip. Are their beaks sticking out? Just keep in mind that a wrong end pip is not only the external pip but also the internal pip, so they can take a bit longer. Mine was yellowish and bloody when they pipped the wrong end. What's your humidity? Can you get a pic?

As for the other egg, did the air cell draw down? You can't kill an egg by candling late in incubation. And yes, you should see it moving along the drawn down membrane.

:fl for all 3 eggs!! You can do it!! Read this:

I actually just got done reading that! Wanted to have my ducks in a row before I did anything. One has the beak sticking through, the other does not but I almost certain there is a small slit in the membrane. my humdity is 75-80, because when I found a few clears at day 7 I stuck different ones in. So I am hand turning those three until these hatch (dreading bringing the humidity back down). And I am a peeker, looking through the plastic will never be good enough. And I was candling weird egg, the air cell has grown since day 18. I have to turn the younger eggs in a bit. I will get a picture then.

I've done nothing to him, he made that hole all on his own.

So now I have a question. I CAREFULLY made a small hole in weird egg's air cell, the baby has not moved positions since last night. I made the hole about the size of a pen tip. I can see an internal pip but no beak. When should I give up hope? Also, wrong end pip 2 keeps making a bigger hole, now there is a little blood, anything special I should do?

Is it moving at all when you candle it? What would today be for him? If it is already day 21, and there is no movement, I would VERY carefully try to make the hole slightly bigger until you can see better. I do this with a pair of tweezers, if you grab a tiny tiny piece of shell with them and bend at a 90 degree angle, usually only the piece that is in the tweezers will actually break. Make the hole bigger by working towards the most open part of the air cell. If you see any bleeding stop and dab with a paper towel. If it bleeds, it's still alive and I would put it back for a while longer. If you don't have any bleeding, keep making the hole bigger until you can see well enough to know if it's moving. Be very mindful of the membrane around the chick, it will bleed at the slightest poke but if you stay in the air cell part, you should be alright. I honestly don't mean to intimidate you about the bleeding, it's pretty scary but as long as you put pressure on it right away, it will be alright. I've had a few lose what seemed like an abnormal amount and they turned out fine.

As far as wrong end pip, the best I can say is dab and hold slight pressure on any place that is bleeding, very carefully, with a paper towel until it stops. It wants to come out before it's ready. It needs to stay in the shell until it has absorbed the blood from the membrane.

Day 20, absolutely no movement, even when I tpa slightly on the shell, normally I get movement. The bleeding had stopped when I saw it on the wrong end pip.

And for an update: not bleeding, wrong end pip one is out! I'm letting the brooder warm up and will be movin him, too many eggs for the little guy. Also, 5 more pips besides the now hatched. Two wrong end, 3 right end.

Yay! I'm glad he made it alright! As for the non-mover, it's up to you, but if I haven't seen any movement in a while, I will open them but a lot of people might disagree with me on that. If you do start to open it and it is alive, just know it's a bit of a commitment because you have to make sure the membrane stays moist until it's ready to come out. I just use a q tip and carefully moisten it with bacitracin and reapply if it starts to dry...

If it were me I would do that too. If it's alive you can help, and if it's not you can check out what was up.

I see to it that they can breathe, and give them a full 24 hours or more before intervening. I've even waited till the end of the hatch to assist non-progressing chicks. As long as they can breathe in there, IMO, they'll be fine to wait, and may even benefit from waiting. That way, you'll not have any issues with unabsorbed yolk or blood vessels. Better a glued chick than a bleeding one.

x2! Sometimes with us being a little too anxious to intervene we think we are going to help when actually we end up hurting. IT IS HARD TO WAIT! I know... I have an internal dialog with myself every time I hatch on whether or not I should help. I have helped. I believe in helping. But I also believe that sometimes there is a reason they are not making progress. And sometimes that reason is that their bodies are not ready. A lot of things are happening when they are working on hatching from getting their lungs ready to absorbing yolk. If we rush and these things are not complete we could end up with a special needs bird or worse yet, a dead chick. If the chick is breathing, make sure your humidity is high enough to keep that membrane moist, or use something to keep it moist.

I pipped the small peep hole and will wait. But now everyone else is pipped and a second chick is mid zip. I will give the nonmovernuntil sunday, at that point i will open it.
