Hey guys!! :frow I am trying to write up something about Speckled Sussex, but what do you know, I can't seem to find "exactly" what I am looking for. Lol.

So...
What are your Speckled Sussex like?
Are yours easily handled?
What are your hens like?
What are your roosters like?
Any funny/sweet/etc stories about them?
What is their meat like?
What are their eggs like?
Etc...

I've never had Speckled Sussex, but have heard they are a pretty awesome breed!

Enough rambling from me.
Ramble away peeps!! :D:wee

My old flock (before we moved) included 3 SS. Loved them, awesome birds! I'll try to address your questions in the order you asked:

1. Two of mine were in the middle of the flock as far as pecking order. The 3rd SS was toward the bottom, she was slow to grow and the others seemed to pick on her for being the smallest (we named her Peanut).

2. They weren't especially in love with being held, but didn't fuss too much when I had to pick them up for a reason.

3. Sweet natured, loved to eat, one of them was very noisy (she sounded like an old guy from the Bronx, lol). Beautiful feathering, after each molt, more speckles appeared.

4. I never had a SS rooster.

5. Peanut was my first bumble foot patient, she was so cooperative about the surgery and the follow up. She never fussed at me for fussing with her. The other thing I remember in particular was what they looked like during molting...some of the homeliest looking bedraggled chickens.

6. Never ate any of them.

7. My SS were decent layers (maybe 5-6 eggs per week each), good sized eggs.

Is that the sort of feed back you were looking for?

Aww, awesome! Thank you ! Yes, that was perfect feedback!!

I've had over a dozen hens over the years, from different hatcheries, and I've got three hens now. Love them! Nice layers, beautiful, and very interactive with humans. Friendly! I don't hand feed or carry the birds around, but they are good if I do have to hold one for some reason.
The cockerels and cockbirds have been another story. Half were very polite boys, good with everyone, not human aggressive at all. The others were human aggressive and not fixable. Beautiful, but raising the cockerels was interesting. Some tasted great, and some were nice flock roosters.
