When A Chicken Dies

used to bury them, now they go in the trash unless their one of my favorites... it sounds terrible but ounce your around birds long enough even the best of bird keepers will lose a few birds here and there and get desensitized to bird death. It's still startling to walk into the coop and find one of em on the ground stiff though, that never goes away.

I had several hatchery chicks die with some type of nuero. issue. I burried the first 3 together and kept the last one in the freezer before burying it. We placed rocks on top of burial site.

Then later after reviewing their symptoms and an IFAS website, regretted burying them. It seems they likely had a type of disease for which I should have burned them. Oops. I didn't have trouble with any more chickens getting sick or any animals digging up the carcasses.

Last week Thursday I last more than half of my flock to a neighbor's dog. I live in Wisconsin. There's a ton of snow on the ground, so I can't bury them. I didn't want to just throw my "babies" in the landfill, so I decided that I would donate them to a local petting zoo. I take my kids there at least once a year. They have TONS of cool animals there. Lions, tigers, bears, oh my!

They have buffalo and wolves and different kinds of birds, alligator and pigs, porcuppine and goats, deer and other cattle, camals and donkey. You get it just about everything.

So I called them up and asked if they would take the meat and feed the lions with it. And they said yes.

This zoo also used to have a contract with our county to pick up all the dead deer, but was out-bid by $20.00 to a guy who just picks them up and throws them in the dump.

What a waste! Like the dump really wants that.

So-I'm glad you complete the circle of life too.

Exactly the way I look at it. I'm sure I'll get attached to the hens, but when they're gone they're gone, all that's left is flesh and bone and nutrients that a living animal might be able to use.
