The egg doesn't have a duckling in it till she starts incubation.
That's up to the duck. She may not start to sit on her eggs until she's got 2 dozen in her nest... or she could one day decide to sit on just one..Final silly question...hopefully!...when do they start incubation? I've tried googling this but loads of different answers come up!

You can start incubation at any time in an incubator, it'll take a few days in there before you can tell if the embryo is developing.
