When Can You Give Chicks Bugs/Table Food, Etc.?

This is a young pullet with some chicks and they were chasing bugs around in the nest day one and now they are 2 weeks old and Mom,ma takes the out of the box to scratch around for bugs and with over 20 chicks the bug is ripped apart fast but then again this is her first hatch and she was home schooled so ya never know I sure hope your kids enjoy watching the chicks eat them bugs .......

No, I did get it at a feed store, but it was only $1 cheaper. Keep in mind, we are in the suburbs of Southern California- there aren't a lot of options. There aren't many areas that allow chickens (and even less people interested in raising them) so there isn't a big demand for chick grit. I could drive out to where we do have a bit of a livestock industry, but it's not worth a 45 minute drive to save $10. I did search online and find it much less expensive, but then it ended up being more expensive because of shipping.

Hi Taffer, I use to live in So Cal ( South El Monte ) and there is a feed company out there called Wesses im pretty sure they can ship to you and there decently priced. When I lived out there we never gave our chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and gunea fowl grit they always scratched the dirt and ate that. I live in Arizona now and the week old chicks that I purchased have been outside since I got them. There three weeks old now and doing great eating there mash, bugs, kale, raisins for training and treats and a not so smart fat tail scorpion that I found torn apart in there coop lol. The flooring in there coop and run is clay and sand because I live in arizona lol, I havent had any problems with them health wise.

Although you might actually be surprised how many folks around you are interested in chickens. There are lots of stealth members on this site, and back yard chickens are making enormous gains in popularity

I raised my 1st 6 chicks inside ...always so careful about temperature water cleanliness and what i was feeding
now I have let a broody hatch eggs, I have seen mom tell and teach this chick what to eat and how to forage,.. let me just say mom isn't as picky as I was!! 3 weeks it eats everything mom does (I did change the flock feed to starter) Had them in the grow out pen but mom decided they wanted to be with the big girls...flew over a 4ft fence both mom and baby...still not sure how that happened lol!!
nature .... a wonder sometimes!!

The mam chicken can easily fly over that but the chicks no, it looks like you have chicken wire on your nursery if it is the 2 week olds can easily squeeze out of it to follow mama.
