When can you lose the marbles?

Ignorant Newbie here...what are the marbles in the water for? The water dish I bought has a very narrow area for the chicks to access the water...I'm not sure the marbles would fit in that space???

I use a quart jar waterer and I never put marbles in it. It just never occured to me that I should.

i have heard of this but in all my years around chickens i have never done this not even with quail hmmm?

The marbles are to make the water shallower so the chicks can't drown. More commonly done with smaller chicks like bantams or especially button quail. They are also shiny and attract the chicks to peck naturally showing them where the water is.
