When would you casterate your colt?

I agree, cut him now. Bulking up comes from working out. Temperment won't change much either, after he's gelded--MY 3 yr old gelding keeps testing me, and I have to remind him who's boss, and that "trust is a 2-way street, buddy!"
I once had a gelding who was easy to manage, transport--worming wasn't the best--great with shots, anybody could ride him, etc. I never met a horse that didn't back down to him. HE was the boss, everywhere he went, but he looked like a cuddly palomino teddy bear. Haven't had one myself THIS young, that wasn't already cut, but I'm shopping. I've talked to all my horsey friends, and they're all agreed--cut them by 6 months old.

We gelded our mustang at 1 yr. Wish it would have been done sooner, as I think he had too much time to develope attitude. We got him from a round-up at 4 mos old (they said he was 6 mos, but he was REALLY small. If I had it to do over, I would have it done @ 7 mos.

SAME HERE!!! My paint is quite stout and he was cut before he was 1. He was acting unruly and I could not control him.

By the way, I am on the Western Slope also. Up on Glade Park. I use Arrowhead Vet Clinic and they are wonderful and not expensive. It is cheaper than neutering a dog.

Ok! Sounds good. It's too cold now, we've been in the negitives at times, but come April should be good ya know before the flies come out but it starts to warm up a bit. Thanks for all the input

he's 7 moths old now... when exactly do you plan on weaning him? - sorry, just wondering, we always weaned ours b/w 4 and 6 months.

Anyways, I agree with what's been said - geld him now (soon/when it warms up a tad) before the fly season. I also recommend you geld him on/just after the day you wean him... the drowsiness from the procedure could help deal with the initial separation anxiety and then the days following, the separation anxiety, would also encourage him to run and move, thus enabling him to heal properly... if that makes sense...

Good luck!

He's going to a friends place at the first of the year for weaning. If it was warmer or a barn type situation it might have been a good time, but with the cold weather I'm guessing the soonest we should do this is early spring time.
