Sand, wood ash and DE inside an old tire I've been tripping over in the garage. Now to wait for the kids to get over their heebee-jeebies of it...

It's funny... I was fretting over my girls. They've done their job and cleared the new pasture of all invasive weeds and well everything else. They've covered it with a nice layer of manure. so I'm getting ready to move them to the new section and all the leaves fell. They are shredding them and turning them into the soil. They all ended up at the bottom of the hill so I'm thinking this will never work... They're carrying them back up the hill and distributing them in some pattern that I'm certain makes sense to chickens. I'm still scratching my head, but the pigs are totally redecorating their run as well. They seem to know what they're doing so why interfere?...

Does it count that my dog decorates my lawn? she lays bombs all over the place, usually in places where humans like to trod. Of course she goes to great lengths to remove all chicken bombs from the same location. Now, i can tread around my yard all day long, and never step on a dog bomb. I go around with my poop patrol scooper/long handled dust pan every couple of days. Always miss one or two, and as soon as dog sees that I've done that, she goes into ultra poop mode again. Why is it that hubby CAN'T walk across the lawn without stepping on a dog bomb... and then track it all through the house before he figures that one of his shoes is not like the other????

BTW, never kiss a dog on the lips.

May not be the fanciest digs, but it beats living next to an interstate being fed Cheerios!
Best. Thread. Ever.

Don't worry, once they figure out what it is they will be in heaven.

I thought about using a tire too, as there were several hidden in the bushes. I decided to get rid of them as the hole wouldn't allow more than one bird at a time. Used this metal tub and it's a hit. The little galvanized buckets hanging by the door are grit and oyster shell.

A tire has the advantage of draining rain when in open area. Another thing I thought to add. Tire can be cut on the sidewall with a knife. Its not going to be easy, but can be done. It will give a larger surface on top also good for catching the sand from being thrown outside tire. Try cutting where the top tread meets the sidewall. Should be only polyester fabric and no steel belting at that point. A good handled knife should do the trick.
