If using it for chickens, I'd cut those flappy dingy points off. But, I'm impressed with the concept of using tires in that fashion. HOW DO YOU TURN THEM INSIDE OUT?

Further question... When using a recip saw to cut the side wall off a tire, does it cut through any metal? And, how rough is the remaining edge of the tire? I'm thinking that the chickens, being the knuckleheads that they are, would spend way too much time picking little bits of rubber off the cut edges. Brainstorming about a way to encase the cut edge to make it less of a chick magnet. Cut garden hose would be too small in diameter, I think. Any other ideas??

To turn the tires inside out,takes a man and a boy. I have done it in the past. Made pots with the steel rim still on one bead. Made an interesting high standing pot. Painted it and placed in garden. I used a knife with a sharp blade to cut the sidewall where there is no steel cords. Sure, it takes some elbow effort. Using a saw does make job easier, but does create some rubber dust. If done on tire while still empty, it can be vacuumed/washed clean. The edge can be blunted with some sandpaper if it feels too sharp. A split garden hose installed over edge should work as well. Gluing it would keep it from popping off. @KettermanHillCoop For the dust bath I was just thinking of enlarging the top portion and not needing to invert.
My neighbor uses tires to grow potatoes in. Works really well for him.
