Where do your girls lay

I have a similar story to some others on here! Until a couple of days ago they were all laying regularly in the nest boxes. Just this morning I was thinking, "hey, is it my imagination or am I getting less eggs this week..." and then sure enough I just happened to notice a couple of eggs (two different hens) sitting in the corner underneath the nest boxes, and two more rubbery "eggs-gone-bad" in the shavings under the roost.

So go figure.

my nest boxes are alot bigger than they tell you to make them also but them low to the ground so the hens can just hop inside them with one hop.all mine lay in there boxes i have not had one probleme yet try making you nest box extra big and they will thank you with fresh eggs!

I had one pullet that was not laying in the nest box, so I took my movable nest box/cat littler bucket and put it right where she was laying eggs (in the corner of the coop under the perch board) and bingo, she got the idea, so little by little I have been moving the nest box across the coop, and she has been going right along with it. I have to move it across the opening to the run today so it is over by the other nest boxes and out of the line of droppings from the others. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. As far as what I use in the nest boxes, I put shredded news paper in and when it is time to clean out the nests, I just put it in the coop with the shavings. Eventually it all ends up in the compost pile. but that is another story.

My first layers were doing good... they were all laying in the boxes. (We have five boxes for 11 pullets) Yesterday I found three on the floor and this morning I found one that someone had laid from the roost.

I caught my pullet just before she layed her egg on the floor and put her in the nest box. Now we don't have hidden treasures.

I read something about hens not laying in nest boxes the other day. It said how the farmer was suppose to walk slowly around the coop about the time they were going to lay so that the hens would get into the nest box so they could be alone and lay the egg. It was a really old book from the 50's I think(oops guess that makes me old too). Kinda sounds like a lot of work but I guess it's not that hard to strole around the chickens so they get in the nest boxes.

You can almost seeing them crossing their legs when you look at them...

Obelisk has laid under the computer desk, under a table and on my son's bed.

My girls religiously use their nest box, only laying outside of it if two girls are in there and no one else can squeeze in at the moment.

However, they laid outside the nest box for a month or so, just after they started laying, and it was a real pain collecting eggs from inside the coop....crawling in there, filthy eggs, trying not to step in poop, etc. I couldn't figure out why they weren't laying in the nest box, but I assumed it was because it wasn't "private" enough for them. So, I took two pieces of scrap trim and put a front on the box. It was pretty much open-fronted before that. The same day, bam! They were laying in the box and have been ever since. My little modification worked quite nicely!

Everyday is like an easter egg hunt. One of the consistant places some lay is under the cover of a lid to a covered cat litter box with the bottom missing.
