Where do your girls lay

I put fallen pine needles in mine, it doesn't cost anything and we have a lot of trees, sometimes dead leaves.

I have pine needles too and keep forgeting to ask if I can use them. Thanks I want to put it under their roosts to catch you know what.

My girls are finally getting the idea. at least for today I found 3 eggs this morning (that is good considering only thre are laying so far) in the nest box what a novel idea!

Most of mine are using the nest boxes, but one seems to prefer the middle of the yard out in the open, and another insists on laying hers on the seat of my 1976 Ford 2600 tractor seat.

Brandy, my big mixed hen always laid her eggs in a large cardboard box full of pine shavings with the opening in front on a shelf in the corner of the tin-house-turned-coop about four feet off the coop floor until I got Penny, a 1yr. old Silky Serama Bantam. Penny's box is on the coop floor in a corner. It is also filled with pine shavings because I read that straw can poke and injure their little eyes. Penny's box is a man's shoe box on it's side with the box top taped to the bottom side so the laying area floor is extended a little. For privacy, I took another top from a same sized shoebox and taped it on top to form an extended ceiling. Hope that made sense...

Anyway, big ole Brandy scrunched up in that little box the last two eggs she laid! I think she's jealous. Now Brandy's not laying at all the past four days, and she was consistently laying 5 or 6 eggs a week. Go figure! Penny, on the other hand, was only laying one egg a week for the first couple of weeks, and now she is laying every other day. Of course there is the possibility that Brandy is laying in the woods somewhere when she free ranges. I think the 3 new little birds drive her NUTS! She won't even eat Cheerios anymore! Oh yeah, Penny laid her first egg on the floor in that corner before the box was made. She didn't want to lay in the larger box I had prepared in another corner with the opened end up. She's SOOOOO little! That's why I put her laying box on the floor. She has never flown up onto even the lower shelves in the coop. Both hens seem to prefer the box opening on the side.
