Out of the three following breeds which rooster would be the MEANEST? And which would you rate the NICEST. Based on personal experience.
Barred Rocks.
Rhode Island Reds.
Black sex-links.
Thanks! :)

Thanks! There are an elderly couple that live near me that know a lot about chickens and they said the exact same thing!!! I was just wondering if it was an old wives tail or something. Thanks again!

Not sure how that works, since black sex links are basically a combo of Rocks and RIR?

I've not had RIR roosters, but my pure Rocks and bsl roosters were all very nice respectful roosters.

I had a friend who was stuck on a farm when she was first married decades ago. Her husband kept chickens and she was in charge of their care, of course. One day, after months of being terrorized by the RIR roo, she grabbed up the rifle and shot him from her kitchen window. I've had other friends tell similar stories.

I once had one like that that was RIR, meanest rooster on the planet! And to think i defended him from the big chickens when he was really small. The nerve! Talk about PECKING, SPURNING and BITING the hand that protects and feeds you. I got rid of him a long time ago, and am glad i did.

Know exactly what you mean heartsizedfarm. I have not had any other breeds with roosters except for RIR I am glad everyone is saying the BSL are nice cause i have a group of chicks that are BSL about three months old that i am raising for a 4-H show and i am pretty sure that there's a couple of roos in there.

Im scarred for life because of a RIR rooster I had called big red. Ok it's only a small scar but hey still not a great story to tell people oh that was a rooster that done that

So I'd say rir is the worst, I've had leghorn, game, Sussex, Minorca (?) etc. none have ever attacked me, the odd accidental peck if I've food or something but never intentional to hurt.

Big red died of mareks over a month ago, I do miss the character a little but one of those days I would have necked him myself he was that bad anyway.

Hi, I'm new here. Not sure if I'm doing this right, but here goes.
I thought my RIR's were pretty mean until I got a white Leghorn. He was the meanest rooster I ever had. I couldn't go into the coop without a broom or shovel. He attacked me twice. Both times from the top roost in the coop. Ripped my ear the first time. Should of done him in then, but a couple of months later he got me again, bloodied my forehead. I killed him right then. I have never needed a broom or shovel to enter the coop since. I guess I just got used to the routine. Right now I'm having a problem with a buff rooster mercilessly mounting the same 3 hens to the point of cruelty.
I almost forgot. I had an EE rooster at the same time as the Leghorn, and any time anyone entered the coop, he would run the Leghorn off and away from us. He was truly the best rooster I ever had. One day I went out in the chicken yard and he and 2 hens were dead. Something attacked them, but all the rest of the chickens including the Leghorn looked fine, so I assumed it was some sort of predator.
