Oh yeah! Thirteen y.o. love death and gore and all that juicy stuff. When I taught 8th grade, I would look specifically for that in novels to keep em interested.
I didn't love gore but tactical maneuvers, sacrafice, heroism espionage and strange facts. I think 13 year olds like stuff like that because most are sheltered from stuff like that until then and disgust and horror are new emotions and emotions can be addicting.

I never thought of it being because of new emotions. I like that.

Very true. When I was doing 1st person historical reenactments (1699 to Vietnam) my card read, "Tell it like it was." Someone said recently 'History is not ours to change but to learn from.'
Having said that, I DO have a pet peeve about trying to tell kids inappropriate things at too young an age. But with a little thought it's not hard to craft the story for them without changing the lessons.
I used do reenactment too, until a few people moved away. I struggle to explain unsavory facts to grown adults. "You know, your 12 year old has an app on her phone about role playing as a consort....you might want to look into that."
"What's wrong with that?"
"........are you aware what a consort is and what they did?"

haha!

horse crap is a staple of my childhood too. i grew up down the block from belmont racetrack in NY. every morning, especially in the summer, the neighborhood smelled like horse crap.
I lived on the edge of the suburbs for a couple years near farm feilds. In the summer everything smelt like manure 🤢

My chicken straw, some wood for the winter, chainsaw, and my sled. This is what my landlord said,
"Not like you had your rigs in it".
Now all my wood for winter is either buried or wet.
I'd make up an itemized list of the cost to replace it all and be deducting that amount off my next rent payment
