I'll have to second buff orpingtons. All of the ones I've owned have been friendly to a fault. They're the first to trot over to say hello, and they like being picked up.
My buff-laced polish is definitely a real charmer. She behaves more like a cat than a chicken, and is cursedly smart about slipping around legs to get out doors. If I don't put her out to graze in my chicken tractor with a few of the other girls, she will slip past my legs if I go into the coop, and stand outside the tractor until I let her in. She spent a couple of days really touch and go as a baby and got handled a lot, so that might have been the difference. My husband was really surprised - he raised a few for 4-H as a kid and thought they were really aloof. She's either an exception, or exceptional.
