One of my girls, a RIR 15 wks, was sounding kind of whiney this morning and getting pretty loud. I sat on a bale of straw in the small run and she hopped onto my head and when I put my hand under her breast she stepped on it and I got her dow, Then she hopped onto my lap and leaned against me as I pet her. She really was getting loud. Sounded like she was in labor for a while. lol Didn't lay but I have a feeling she's getting close. I hated to leave to run errands. When I got home my 2 granddaughters ran for the hen house as I ran to stick ice cream in the freezer. I hollered don't you dare go look before I get there!!!!!!!!!! So they stood outside by the run until I joined them Nothing, dern it! lol

I got an EGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!! YAY!! It's brown so it's one of my RIR's. My first egg! It's small, like a guinea egg. They are all just over 17 weeks old!! Even better, she laid it in our nest box.

Thank you! I think more are coming - the leghorns all have huge red floppy combs and the RIR's do as well and two of them will squat for me. I put out the oyster shell. And the golf balls appear to have worked - she put her little egg right next to the golf balls.

I know it's probably bad for the chicken to lay this early, but as it's almost winter maybe that will give them a bit of a break. (I can't help but selfishly hope they keep laying tho!).
