More raucous singing this morning. More pacing in and out of the coop. More messing about in the nest box. They are such teases! I went ahead and bought another dozen eggs from a local hobby farm yesterday.

I probably don't have much place to be impatient yet, compared to some on this thread. We've got 2 leghorns, 3 production reds, and 1 wyandotte all born May 1st so they're just getting to about 17 weeks old. We've got golf balls in the 2 nest boxes, and the girls have checked them out. None have squatted yet, but they are all getting pretty red in the face.

I've been buying local eggs from the feed store here in town, and this week the clerk even said she expected us to not need eggs by now. I just keep giving the girls the pep talk every day.

I'm still waiting... I feel like I have been scooping out poop from the coop for 20 years now... and my chickens are'nt being very grateful by popping out an egg or two just to keep me going. I believe my chickens are about 22 weeks old now, I've owned them for 3 months. Their combs have been turning red for 2 weeks so I know the hormones are stirring inside. First chicken out of the 12 to lay, gets a special treat.

Well, last week my husband had a dream and then I had one last night, it was horrible, of rats and cats and dogs and a kid, all breaking into the coop to steal the eggs. It can't happen and I know it but boy was that dream real. ICK.

I was hoping our new coop would be done before the girls started to lay but my husband hurt his back (digging the footings) and then last week he reinjured it, so I am not even thinking of work on the new coop for a month. He will be out of work then and I will take a week vacation and we should be able to get most of it done, if not all.

My bribe to our inner kids is a trip to Universal and the Harry Potter area. That certainly will keep us going...now all we need are eggs to make us strong!

Yay!!!! Buffy laid an egg! I'm assuming it was Buffy as she was doing most, but not all, of the singing. Can anyone confirm if this is likely a Buff Orpington egg? My other guess would be the Barred Rock.

She laid it on the poop board, not in the nice clean nest box. Luckily it was on the clean end

The comparison shot is of a smallish white large egg and Buffy's egg on the right.

Yay!!!!!!!!

(hopefully these links will work. I'm not sure why the pics themselves did not post)

I have worn a HUGE path to the coop. Whenever anyone gets looking for me now, they go straight to wherever the chickens are!
