My oldest chicken i have ever had was around 8 years old when she passed. She had atharitis in her feet and legs, had catararacs in both eyes and could not see her feed well. The last 6 months of her life she was in a pen of her own and hand fed.
She was a great broody of mine and good mom. She raised many chicks here. She was a barred rock. Stripe was her name.

The chicken on the left is named Pip, while the one on the right is simply named Silver Hen! They are both around 10 and still living!

My friend has lost her 3 house chickens in very close order. She had 5 yr. old Seramas and a silkie. From the sound of what she told me, I'm guessing it was Mareks. They could no longer stand, and she had to hand feed them. I've heard serama & silkies have no resistance to most diseases.

She's planning on getting a frizzle cochin next. Hope history won't repeat itself.

got 5 of my original 8 still here. about 5 1/2 years old. only get about 6/7 eggs a week from them. but the golden wyandotte is the head of the flock and the 2 black astrolopes go broody when anyone sits on eggs and they are great babysitters and chase off anything that comes near the little one.so although putting them in the pot is what im told i should do, they have important places in my flock and sentimental value also
