Yeah, I'm very tolerant of animal behaviors.
The only thing that would bother me is noise, but not like it would bother most people. Tons of background noise is normal to me, lots of dog yapping and goat screaming. But loud screeches in my face would get annoying, which is why I want a huge aviary/gazebo before I get a cockatoo. A safe place to put the crying baby essentially

That's a good idea, also usually they won't scream when you are with them....just when you leave but the screaming is very loud so it goes right through my bedroom door. I like the aviary idea!

I was going to get a hand raised baby for my first one, the cockatiel, so that I start with a clean slate, but after that I will probably adopt all my birds.

That's good, I know with a first bird you want it to not have any past bad memories from previous "owners"

I quoted owners because if they have that bird bad experiences they aren't worth being noticed as a owner.

Yep, Im the Paco Taco one. I tease him the time. I have a stuffed snake with a squeaky in it's tail. that is Sir Slithers, who comes squeaks and slaps paco upside the head, he loves it and dances around on top of his cage. Cockatoo's play rough !! ALWAYS be careful, because they can get excited and accidentally nip you and that nip can leave you needing stitches. His other nemesis is Little Miss Hootin Anny, the plastic garden owl. She'll smack beaks with him and likes to sneak up on him when he's not paying attention and bite him. nothing funnier than catching him off guard, he screams, startled, instantly puffs up and I'll yell HAH !!! I GOTYOU !!!! he'll laugh nerviously and un puff and then do his squeaky thing trying to pretend he meant to scream all along

I got paco as a rescue, long story short the lady I got him from, constantly fought with her boyfriend and paco learned a lot of choice words,.. started using them on her,and just had to go.... Me being retired navy, how could I turn down a cursing parrot?

Loud... oh can they scream, I believe the M2 is the loudest animal around, i think they can scream over 140 dB or something crazy like that. If he ramps it up you will need earplugs. When I first got him and we were breaking each other in, he had some moments, but. well honestly I don't think he ever got that loud. in several years now. He will tantrum and get loud every now and then but never really let loose.. he knows he'd get paddled if he did that, so he don't.
I talk to him like a regular person, and if you listen they will talk to you too. They have their very own little language and you can kind of pick out words, but they will use the same 'parrot words' for the same thing, so you actually can sort of learn their language and talk a bit. It's like a 4 year old though, don't expect to discuss physics, but, ok which snack do you want? mango or apple? pick one. mango... appoooo, ok you can have an apple snack, but just one... I SAID ONE !! yah nice try.. and he laughs.

they DO need attention though, you can't just spend 5 minutes with them and lock them away, they will start feather plucking and other destructive behavoirs if you do.

my cookie got really excited one time because my dad was in the room and she wanted to get to him. She bit me and it HURT! She wasn't trying to hurt me she just got caught up in the moment. That's the only time she's bit me since I got her in May of last year.

I think they yelled alot in cookies previous home because she gets really excited if I yell. They said she knows some curse words but I haven't heard her say any. She does yell for me to "KNOCK IT OFF" if I tell her to because of the screaming.

Cookie is loud but like you said if they ramp up you need to get earplugs. I can hear cookie outside sometimes....and I live in a gated neighborhood where the houses are like 10 feet apart

I do that too, we have conversations and she talks to me in her "cockatoo language".

Definitely, we were really busy after buying our property and I wasn't spending as much time with her as I should have. She started plucking *which she has a history of* and thankfully they have almost all grown back now

Wonderful birds but beware of: LOUD, needy, and destructive behaviors. I also recommend not getting a young one but instead a 25+ year one. If you have bird experience and can put up with all that then you'll be very pleased with cockatoo ownership. Also thank you for rescuing! They are the most commonly surrendered bird to rescues and need to get adopted.

I don't agree with your last sentence at all. I want a young bird who doesn't have a troubled past. I got my Georgie at six months and will always buy my birds young, not from a rescue. They do good work but I want a fresh bird

I had surgery several years ago and wasn't doing so well afterwards, it was back surgery i was in real bad pain due to complications and passed out a few times because of pain. Anyways, when I first got him, paco knew something was wrong and would just NOT leave me alone, he would literally walk right behind me everywhere I went, like 2 feet behind me. Initially i was like aww cute, but after my first session keeling over, I got very worried, god forbid i lose my balance or twist wrong, or pass out again and fall on him,.. he's dead. Id say No paco, stay on your cage, put him there and he'd be right back over, id be ok STAY ON YOUR PERCH. id hobble to the bathroom and there he is right behind me. So I locked him up, so he starts crying and now im like GD it bird, STOP, I feel bad now !!! I ended up with him being able to perch on my walker as i got around the first 2 or 3 days and when I didn't have to have that in the house, holding his stick for him to stand on while i moved.

They can absolutely be like little children sometimes and need to be treated as such and YES you CAN hurt their feelings, and they will let you KNOW TOO.

Have you ever been around a rescue bird??? Not all of them have a troubled past, some people love their birds but can't afford or give them the time they need. Yes some have bad pasts but some are good birds who need a new home that loves them. Some are also young. Why would you support over bred birds in small cages being inbred and over bred and given a sad, unstimulating lifewhen there are already thousands of bird that need homes? Why would you support more bird be hatched causing more birds in rescues? All of my birds have been birds that were in need of new homes never bought at a pet shop or breeder. This is just my opinion

I would also add that my mom's 'tiel was a baby when they rescued her so yes actually very young and not from a troubled past

Not all places that breed birds run puppy mills with them. I know a few breeders who take very good care of their birds and even got sued, yes sued, once or twice because he would not sell a bird to people saying, they won't take care of it properly, so im not selling.,

Not all places that breed birds run puppy mills with them. I know a few breeders who take very good care of their birds and even got sued, yes sued, once or twice because he would not sell a bird to people saying, they won't take care of it properly, so im not selling.,

I don't want to argue just stating my opinion I know not all breeders are bad but usually the Craigslist breeders or the ones for a pet store are bad. It's just so many need homes and people judge them so fast. I never buy birds I only buy " in need of rehome" from Craigslist or rescue.
