Who here owns 5 or more acres?

Exactly.

That is the figure that should appear first in your letters to State Rep/State Sen/State Attorney General.

If the board finds in favor of the County you still have arbitrator/Superior Court? 500%!!!

This is the figure to use for `social engineering' as well (media/threat of), e.g., `500% property tax increase on home/property of disabled Vet! County Tax assessment board's motives questioned!'

Don't let the bustards (that's a `foul', friends) get you down, Cyn!

Take care, and good head-hunting,

John

Yes
24 acres
Bought the land outright, financed building the house

My taxes actually went down this last year - a combination of drastically reduced area home values and the tax cap on homestead properties. Many people's homes have increased so much in value since they first bought them that the fall in home prices came no where near the capped value, where mine was just built 3 years ago so I reaped some benifit from the dismal fact that my home is not worth what I paid to build it.

Sure hope you can do something about that mess of property taxes Speckled! Looks like they will be something important to look into for those buying, but unfortunately hard to foresee.

Thanks for the tips and points about buying land with a home vs. buying and building.

Well one thing that Calif. has right is property taxes.

Thank you, John! Yes, we will use that approach with the percentage. Makes it sound just as crazy as it really is.

DH has applied for an increase in disability percentage. Naturally, he will have to jump through hoops to get it and hopefully, he won't be denied. If he gets an increase, that will help out somewhat. Again, it's petitioning the government, trying to force them to get something right for a change. He will take SS in just over two years at 62 and that may help, if it's still there or they haven't decided it's not a good thing to allow anyone to be able to get it at 62 and push it back out of reach!

Looking forward to some relief from somewhere, for cripes sake! I don't want to leave my home we've improved on since we moved here. It was a jungle with no outbuildings. Now, it's a working mini-farm with orchards and raised bed garden and coops, etc, etc, etc.
I want my five acres, darn it!

Dennis, I know you were kidding. I know it. I just know it, LOL. My pal, Ellie, *also "Ellie* on BYC, lives near Redding. Her taxes are pretty darn high. Honestly, it's not so much an increase as such a huge increase all at once. And the fact that it's based on nothing except need for revenue, not fair market value, as is supposed to be the case.

1. Who here owns five or more acres?
We have 11 acres
2. Did you inherit the land or purchase it?
I bought it twice. First time with my ex through a bank- second time to buy from him via divorce, my parents loaned me the money... it was worth it, I now have a home built on it.
3. If purchased, how did you finance it?
Bank financed.

Will also be looking to buy my parents home - or inheriting, which ever comes first. It's 38 acres. We'll finance that as well when the time comes.

No I'm not kidding. The rate maybe high but we don't have the surprise of one year they double or more. Property taxes don't even keep up with inflation here. I don't know if there's i perfect system but ours sounds better then yours.

Bought 15 acres in Missouri
Did not inherit it
Paid 50% down and financed the rest with the bank

The realtor helped with financing. Was going to go with owner financing but the realtor advised against it in this case because the seller did not own the property free and clear.
