Who the Duck?!?

Cayugas drakes stay black in color with the shiny greenish head, the females as they get older will start to turn gray with some white poking out sometimes. I have two females and they are just over a year old now, and they both have spots of white popping out. Hopefully your neighbors will just let you keep him, that way you can protect him at night from preditors. Good luck.

So the people with the cochins came looked around and said they weren't sure anymore if they wanted to give them away they might make them house chickens instead. We had a very disappointing weekend...
Until this morning when we found muscovey ducklings for sale and scraped together enough spare change for two. My three year old then opened her piggy bank and we got enough out for one more. We got to the place and for the price of three ducklings got a mother duck, three eight week old babies, and two tiny little two week old babies...phone numbers were exchanged for future trades, sales and for advice. We will ask them about ducks and they will ask us about chickens. I also pointed them at this site. Howard has some new friends.
I will post pictures later.

The only problem is that Howard is terrified of them...lol the babies are a third of his size and he is terrified of them.

That's usually the way it is the adults are afraid of ducklings. lol just keep an eye on the 2 week olds that the others don't pick on them or hurt them. They are beautiful. 2 week olds in a brooder right?

Yeah they are in an old rabbit cage. We didnt notice the little hole for the feeder and got home to find them running loose and chasing Howard. It took forever to catch them again.

I just have a metal dog food dish for them to splash in for now. I have a bigger container for them to use once we build a couple ramps so they will be able to get in and out. I have a chick waterer in their for them to drink from and a chick feeder just until I can get a hopper feeder on Thursday.

If the holes are larger than half inch I wouldn't leave them outside over night a mink or coon could reach in and grab would not be a pretty pic. Get some 1/2 inch hardware cloth and wrap the entire cage with it. this link shows a cheap waterer for ducklings that they can't climb into and drown. Also ducks need buckets once they get to be around 4-5 weeks old to dunk their heads into to clean out their eyes and nares. Chicken waterers won't work with ducks.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/750869/raising-and-caring-for-ducklings#post_10611711
