Who's Hatching Ducks? Hatch With Us!! *Page 3*

Hi All,

Thanks barnwife but how long till they stink ??

They will start stinking after a few days... if kept in the bator

I have 2 in the incubator now, they are due to hatch next week. I have 3 girls on nests (thought we only had 2, but apparently there are three nests. One girl is on 20, one is on 4, and the other one is questionable because she is hiding her nest under a camper...

Not sure when any of these are due though...

Depending on the breed oegblady, they can take anywhere between 28 and 35 days. I have a wonderful duck book that explains it... Raising Ducks by Storey.

I only use a forced air incubator if I am incubating... It works well and I have had great success with my hatches for the most part. A friend on mine has it right now hatching out... they've had babies popping out all day... talk about happy easter... lol...

well good luck to all of you! have a great Easter all!!!

For my quail, they pretty much hatch or are infertile, so far...

for my ducks, they have all gone stinky at about 1 week after due if they weren't done by then. It's warm and wet in an incubator...thats all bacteria needs to grow prolificly. It doesn't take as long as you might think.

With quail eggs, I have to check my bator for weepy/stinky yucks two or three times daily...more if I'm not busy.

Usually you can catch em before they get to the ,ake-you-retch stage by picking them up and sniffing the shell...good eggs have a nesty smell, bad eggs start with a mildly musty smell and grow progressively worse.

When I was still learnign the "sniff-test" method, I would put the ones I was pretty certain were dead on the left, the ones I was not certain in the middle, and the good ones on the right in neat rows (now in turner racks lol)

I recommend this if you are not certain and if you have a couple of eggs to try it out with.

you could always put a store-bought chicken egg in to get the smell after a few days if you are VERY sure you want to know the smell

I am glad you find the info helpful...I had noone and boy, was it a process lol.

I am glad my stinkily-learned ways can help someone!

Good info. I usually use the smell test and catch it before it is to stinky. I now have to wait until the to stinky kicks in since I have had this head cold for almost a month.

Congrats to everyone else and Wifezilla, your babies are beautiful!!!!

Today as DBF was cleaning the brooder for his runners, we gave them their first swim. They are 2 1/2 weeks old now and they were so dirty!!! I got the fun job - duck tub-sitting!!!!!

Aren't they just adorable when they take a bath?

I moved my 'babies' to the pond with the big ducks a few weeks ago, you would have thought they had never seen water, they were having so much fun!

I was hoping you'd see this - aren't they cute??! Had to change the water 4 times; as soon as they got in they pooped and kept eating it. EWWW. I know...I'm a ducky newbie - just tell me that's normal...

At first they didn't know what to think, then the yellow one, which I named Bill (because he/she's the only one with an orange bill and my fave) dove right in and started doing the frog kick. The others followed and it was so cute!

I just asked a question about the membrane pipping thing on another thread. Apparently it is just fine. Mine is all the way through now. . .
