Why are my silkies so skiddish?

Eventually they'll get used to you if you handle them every day and hand feed them treats from a young age. My chickens are all grown up now but I still pick them up to inspect them and hold them for few moments before I put them down. The orpingtons are the friendliest, they'll follow me around the yard to check out what I'm doing. If I go inside they'll come up to the window and peck at it because they know I'm in there. Eventually they'll leave me alone and wander away to forage, but they'll come running when they see me come outside again.

Here I thought it was just me! :bow Out of 12 Silkies, only one's somewhat affectionate. The rest avoid me like the plague. And after all those rave reviews describing what great pets Silkies make.... Ironically, my "flighty" Mediterranean breeds, namely Leghorns, are leaps and bounds friendlier!

Totally agree with the previous members: treats, treats, treats. Crouching to their level can do wonders, as well. :)

Thanks Alex!
I actually built a brooder especially for them so they'd be eye level. I got the plans from Ana White's website (so cute). Anyway, I had all these ideas about how I would keep them inside and when they got older I'd have birds that were friendly with me and would sit the eggs of others. I'm having second thoughts. Already moved them out, far to messy, and too scared. I don't want them to be scared all the time. They are cute to look at, but not interested in me one bit, even with treats!

You're very welcome! :)
Fantastic job making the brooder suggestion a reality. :thumbsup Oh, Silkies. At least they're adorable....that's one factor they have going for them. :love
