Eventually they'll get used to you if you handle them every day and hand feed them treats from a young age. My chickens are all grown up now but I still pick them up to inspect them and hold them for few moments before I put them down. The orpingtons are the friendliest, they'll follow me around the yard to check out what I'm doing. If I go inside they'll come up to the window and peck at it because they know I'm in there. Eventually they'll leave me alone and wander away to forage, but they'll come running when they see me come outside again.
Out of 12 Silkies, only one's somewhat affectionate. The rest avoid me like the plague.
And after all those rave reviews describing what great pets Silkies make.... Ironically, my "flighty" Mediterranean breeds, namely Leghorns, are leaps and bounds friendlier!
