So what got you interested in chickens?
What do you like about them?
And do you enjoy it?
I grew up with horses, chickens, dogs, and just about every farm animal you can think of.
Now that I'm an adult, I've married somebody who enjoys the farm animals, too. We bought some property and it didn't take me long to fill it up!
To me, chickens are like a fish aquarium. They calm me down and give me something to mother and look forward to. They all have their little personalities and I love watching their "society" and how each bird fits into it.
I grew up on a farm, then moved to the big city. Hated it.
Plus, I have an unfulfilled maternal instinct...I guess I'm trying to fill the void with animals. First parrots, then dogs, now chickens. Probably a good thing I was never able to have kids, I'd be like the old woman who lived in a shoe...
They are so much fun to watch. Very relaxing.
Plus, I do love eggs.
I chose chickens over other animals because they are the best! I love that one breed can come in 20 different varieties. There is a breed for everyone. They are easier to raise, breed and take care of. Chickens also have tougher competition. For example, with a black chicken, if it has 1 white feather it gets disqualified but if it were a black cow nothing would happen. Poultry people seem nicer than other people. We arent as stuck up as horse people for example, poultry people are more laid back also.
Quote:Hmmm I was born loving animals so chickens just fit right in...
They are pretty, lay eggs, and their personalties, and they are pretty, and they are prettyy LOL..
Yes I enjoy them alot
Growing up I had a dog and cats and helped my grandmother with her guppies...
Now that I'm married, I'm allergic to cats and dogs, and rabbits and guinea pigs and ferrets and mice and rats...basically if it's got fur, I'm allergic to it.
AND I work in a petshop D'OH!
Chickens seemed to me to be low maintenance, loving, fun and best of all, uncommon! I've never been one to follow the herd, so this was really cool.
They have they're own personalities, more catlike than doglike though.
The eggs are just a pleasant addition to keeping them.
I'm fairly new to chickens, but I was raised around LOTS of birds(parrots, mostly) and I think that chickens are just so beautiful! And, they do have very distinct, adorable personalities...from what I can see from my three that I've had for a little over a month. They do have a calming effect and mine just make my day!
And, then there are the eggs, which I haven't seen yet, but am anxiously awaiting!!
This is the type of face that started it all for me years ago.
A love for most kinds of animals at birth. Horse was one of my first words, kitties, birds and other animals followed soon after. Parrots in the house, chickens in the backyard, horses out in the pastures, how much better can it get?
As for me, I never even thought about chickens when I was growing up. Then all of a sudden I had chicken wallpaper, glass chickens, chicken baskets you name it!!!!! It was only natural to me to go to the real thing. I know I don't regret it. I find my babies calming. I love to listen to them talk and crow and just about everything!!!!
Good question. Actually, why not chickens? It seems like a fever lately doesn't it? I jumped into it just like alot of other people, just look around at this site! But that still doesn't answer your question, so lets say, I really just wanted them. It seemed like the right thing to do, they are so giving as a creature can get. All you have to do is love them, feed them, secure them, enjoy them, and they give so much in return.. eggs for one, they are cute and funny to watch, they trim your lawn, eat bugs you don't have to kill, they're cute, oh the list goes on!
