Why do people buy chickens and not research how to care for them?

The cruel mountain man - if you find a way to get his identity, plate number - something - and can report him to every authority that will listen, maybe just maybe the animals in his "care" (blech - what care?) can be confiscated. I think I would have tackled him right then and there and run off with the goose!

It is indeed astonishing how many people get "ownership" ofbeings they know (and care) almost nothing about. It is saddening and maddening. I'm ranting right along with you!!!!

LOL! Sort-of! We only have 3 1/3 acres but we make the most of it. Most of those ducks were not "actually" mine. Some people who used to live a few houses down got ducks and let them live on their pond. They moved away and "gifted" them to the new owners (more like left them there) who did absolutly nothing with them. After about 1 1/2 years I left them a note and said to tell me if they wanted them, otherwise they were going to become mine. No one ever got back to me so I adopted them. They would lay in one spot and we would collect the eggs, but then they would move and we couldn't find them, so we ended up with A LOT of babies! My mom works with a woman who LOVES ducks and took dozens of them to keep on her huge pond and to feed. Her neigbor is retired and he loves them too. He feeds them all every day (actual duck food too) and since he's home all day he keeps an eye on them and protects them.

As per the lady... I have a similar situation. One of our neighbors who's had chickens near two months now stopped by our house the other day while looking for one of their dogs that got loose. The guys were peeved at their chickens for eating the dirt in their run and didn't know why they did it, so asked me. Having already read three books on keeping chickens, I told 'em. Then they wanted to know other stuff, which I easily answered as well.

And I don't even have my chickens yet.

I'm not really scared of him, but I don't have a cell and my mom's doesn't take pics. His car is kept elseware and I can never get an info to report him with. Next time I'm up there I'm going to try though.

I see that stuff at the flea market all the time. I also see the same people treating puppies that way.

Probably because they figure its a chicken, its not rocket science, you don't have to have a masters degree in chickens to have them.

Some people are just like that and probably shouldn't be allowed to breed either but ......freedom makes it great here.

Just like any animal...how many times do we see purebreed dogs, cats, ect. in shelters because people just want to get them because they are cute. I am an animal lover and make sure they are cared for correctly. I not be an expert on animal care but a little love and caring go a long way.....plus food an water.
