Why do people buy chickens and not research how to care for them?

That's why we have BYC to get us through our questions. But I have a neighbor with a dog that never gets attention until he comes to my yard. But I don't really like dogs. But I'm not mean to them.

Because they don't think beforehand...
When I decided to keep Tom and Jerry, I made sure that I knew what they needed as babies, and then as they grew...

I agree, Pipermark.

I also agree, Cyn. It's like they were hiding behind the door when the empathy chip was being doled out.

I think like you do, Judy...
LOL, Horsechick...

We had a kid and his mother the other day come into the petshop where I worked asking to buy an Iguana...me and the other girl were like oh no! They had no idea how big they got, how crabby the males can get and just simple things like that...this would be their first reptile which isn't an iguana isn't. A bearded dragon, a leopard gecko or a crested gecko are so much better...even Grovyle the Water Dragon I almost adopted would've been a better one...they have personality and don't mind being held and picked up and cuddled...you haven't lived until you've had a Grovyle and a Psycho (Sailfin Lizard) on your head and a 3 foot Beardie on your shoulder...

A feed store not far from me had a bunch of different chickens, roosters, other birds in tiny cages, crammed together, no feeder in there, and all the waterers either had yucky, green slimey liquid in them, or they were empty. I asked the owner about the birds, and he said that they were one of his employee's, and he was allowing him to keep them at the store. When I pointed out that they had no food or water, he just looked away, totally annoyed, and stopped talking. I went home and called Animal Control, and they promptly went over there to "have a little talk with him". (Now the only problem I have is that I can no longer shop at that store, because doubtlessly he knows that it was me who turned him in...

It's not just with chickens it's with every animal..people want things to say they have them, and don't even take care of them, horses with out shelter, chickens with out feed, cows getting beatin, bunnies stuck in cages without proper care..........people are idiots if they can't take care of their animals properly why have them?

ugh:mad:

What's wrong with corn?I feed my birds corn with a mix of layer of a few pellets its about 90% corn though. But it hasn't hurt them. Thats what I feed my older ducklings too.

Corn is not a complete feed, not enough protein, vitamins and minerals. It has way too much carbohydrate for optimal health as the sole diet and will contribute to brassiness in white birds. Remember Hawkeye? He was raised on corn before I got him and his white areas were all gold. Within a month of feeding him a better diet, all that was gone.

I have often wondered this. If you don't like them, why do you want them? If you like them, you wouldn't treat them like that

It makes me furious to see defenseless animals being mistreated or neglected. A confined animal (and most domestic animals, confined or not) just can't feed and care for itself! And very few animals enjoy being alone 24/7.

You just haven't seen the effects. Most likely they aren't getting enough calcium and have severe nutritonal deficenies. It is supposed to be the other way around. 90% layer, 10% corn. Would you want to live life malnourished?
