Why do people buy chickens and not research how to care for them?

Thus the original backyardchickens was born, where people were glad to help the newbies through the trials and tribulations of chickendom.

And that tradition caries on here to this day!

I got my chickens first then researched how to care for them and found this site, they get very good care now thanks to byc. Don't knock all of us who got the chickens first!!

I know it's hard, but one thing I have learned in my many years working with different animals, is that you should never give money to someone who treats their animals poorly. In other words, DON'T BUY FROM THEM! There are many people who think they're doing the right thing by buying animals that are in horrible situations, but the fact is that all that does is encourage the seller to keep doing what they're doing. The best thing you can do is get animal control or the SPCA involved.

for the same reason these people tend to have kids. Because they can.
Honestly it makes me ill.

I am not sure exactly what you meant here, but it came across to me as pretty rude.

I doubt that most people with a lot of kids have them ~just because they can~ I am sorry, but this statement is offensive to anyone with more than one kid. I have 5 children, and I love & care for every single one of them. AND I planned every single one of them. Likening children to animals is not cool in my book, nor is mocking large families. If that is not what you meant, my apologies, but that is how it came across.

I don't think it was in reference to large families at all, and I certainly didn't read a tone of mockery to large families either. It was in reference to people who don't take care of their kids and really shouldn't have them. "for the same reason THESE people" not just people in general, but the neglectful abusive type being referred to in this thread.

I think it's great if someone wants a large family. If someone wants 20 kids, that's great by me as long as they are cared for and loved as they should be. If someone has 1 kid and doesn't take care of him/her, they shouldn't have the kid. I don't believe it was a reference to numbers at all (or a comparison of children to animals), but rather to the quality of care and life.

Believe me, I don't anymore. I bought from him once, then got the one roo missing the toe, but thats it. I hadn't gone back a lot at that point and really seen the full extent of his mistreatment. Now I buy from the other people and scowl at him as I walk past.

They only way I would ever buy from him is if it was something I really, really, really wanted. He had some very pretty partridge silkies he was selling by the pair, but I wasn't about to buy them from him. If I want some I will order from a hatchery or find someone else.

I didn't plan on having a backyard chicken, but after acquiring mine, I found this web site, and it really came in handy. I've been a lurker for over a year.

I wish I could say that I got chickens after I did research but I did not....BUT it was not my fault.

My MIL showed up on my doorstep with two roosters as a surprise gift for my kids. I hated the way that it happened but I love that it happened because now that I have been able to do research and build a proper coop I love all our birds like my children. We went and got hens and they are laying and we feed them treats and watch them and take pictures cause they are like our kids. I know better than to go get babies, I have only gotten full grown hens because I know my limits.

I think that people have good intentions when getting all kinds of animals but then they find out that they can't handle it later and try to give their animals away. I think that is sad and I hope that I have been as responsible as possible given the circumstances.

I didn't read it as a slam on big families, or even on families. I know that this poster has 2 kids (right?) and I assumed that she meant that the types of people who don't bother to educate themselves about animal husbandry are in the same league as people who are not capable of raising children, either on their own (i.e. without relying on government assistance for long periods) or who do raise them on their own but don't bother to really nurture them and provide them with love, education, morals, values, rules, and guidelines for how to be a compassionate adult (...parent... pet-owner... neighbor... employee... etc.) later down the line.
