Why do you keep bantams?

I would not want to live in world without bantams. Those micro minis provide countless hours of entertainment with their sassy strut and invincible attitude. There is a big heart in those tiny feathered bodies, and each one of them deserve a honored place in any hobbyist's coop.

what's not to love about their little faces

- they have huge personalities to make up for the sizes, little being petted, less space (which means more chickens), less food. I have always just had bantams and plan on sticking with them.

Those whose lifestyle prohibits the use of electricity use bantams to hatch their LF eggs. Pretty handy, right?

I wasn't interested in bantam breeds. Didn't want any of 'em. What's the use? Midget chickens. Ha!

I drove to a farm to buy a couple of Cochins because the feed store didn't stock any. I had TOTALLY missed the word "bantam" in the Craigslist ad. But once I got there, I couldn't come home without two pullets. (One of which turned into a rooster, ooops.) So the next time I was at the feed store, I stopped next to the bantam bin "just to look" and came home with two Sebright chicks. Both turned into roos. I tried again at another feed store, got another Silver Sebright and a Golden Sebright chick and they were both pullets.

Gosh they're gorgeous birds. The girls lay very well, not terribly tiny eggs, just smaller, cuter eggs.

So now I have both LF and bantam breeds in my flock. If a breed I want comes in a bantam form, I am quite likely to get those eggs to hatch, if I can.

Midget chickens. Yup.

I keep bantams because they were the first chickens I got, because my grandfather and father both bred/are breeding bantams, because they are amazing foragers and broodies, and, they look great running around the yard!! Living lawn art!! I have eaten plenty of bantams over the years, they all taste like chicken!!
