Why don't people listen... Rant

LOL! My wife and i often say (usually after observing some really bad behaving parents): "You must pass a test and obtain a license to drive a vehicle, but every dummy is allowed to make kids…" - or buy animals, we should continue the sentence.

Having seen the driving skill (or lack of) of so many I think the test needs some modifications.

I hope I'm not going out on a limb here, but I've seen very few pre-fab coops/coop-run combos that IMHO were little more than toys. And believe me I've looked, because even though I've raised poultry all my life I am no carpenter! Even some of the ones I've seen that looked halfway decent still don't look like to me they'd house anywhere near the number of birds they claim, especially not if you had to keep the birds confined all or most of the time, as many of us do. I've read plenty on minimum space requirements but again IMHO, if you only provide the minimum you are going to have a lot more maintenance and cleaning chores.
Agree absolutely! The number of birds you can keep in those pre-fabs is always highly exaggerated and most of them are really hard to clean, especially those "run" areas under the coop itself. Most of the prefab-coops are just long wire-tunnels and one literally has to crawl into to get the corners cleaned out.
Yet, they are an easy start if you use some common sense.

LOL! - Tell me about it! I'm German and had to go to driving school for three months, take (and pay!) at least 24 hours of driving practice before i was even allowed to apply for the test. - Passed the computer test five times and laughed out loud about the questions asked - and never had a chance to schedule a road test in Houston because those were only available Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, my core working time.

What’s she gonna do with the two chicken killing Aussies now?

Client wanted chickens. However, she's not there every day. Told her the basics, but she didn't listen.

Purchased a coop-run combo said to hold 15 birds, but only realistically holds 3, barely. (3×3.5). Put up poultry fencing for a larger run, then purchased 10 standard chicken and 4 Ginny's.

Seeing she wasn't going to be around all the time, she purchased 2 mini Australian Shepherds to protect her flock... I voiced my opinion, which she didn't like.

Pups are outside only. Live in the barn or garage. Very little human interaction. Guess what? Pups got a little older, and bored, and decide to do what bored puppies do. Chase what's available. Chickens. Two missing chicken's and ginny's. Feathers all over the place.

Now she's wondering why, and what to do about it. Why don't people do their homework before they commit.

Sorry for the rant. Highly frustrated.

You may be right. Perhaps it's time for some,,, underhanded tactics. ( Pause for evil laugh) get a fake newspaper printed and rush over to her house and show her the headline: BACKYARD CHICKENS LINKED TO ZOMBIE OUTBREAK! Amateur chicken owners urged to surrender flocks for testing!

You are quick with the best solution I've heard on this subject!!!

Well, no chickens have been killed, so far. The missing have come back. Thankfully.

She had underground fence installed, ( My advice), around the area the property. She purchased a new coop, ( don't know the size), hopefully it's adequate..
She is having a permanent fence put up around the coop with a hot wire,(my advice), around said fence. To keep her dogs and other predators out.

However, the fence will be welded wire, no apron, and no overhead protection.

It's a start. Hawks and eagles, two breeding pair of bald eagles in our area, will deplete the flock, if the coyotes , fisher cats, weasels, minks, coons, opossums, skunks, bobcats don't do it first.

One evening last year i saw a Raccoon entering the duck-house, ran out in my pajamas, barefeet, grabbed a broomstick and beat the 'coon dead. - My wife now thinks i'm totally "loco". - So even doing the right thing (in your opinion) can make you look bad in the eye of the observer…
AWESOME!! You...are my new hero!! Broomstick Man!! If your wife ditches you, feel free to come live with us!!:thumbsup

I don't know, I can live with being thought of that way. I shot at a weasel last year after It murdered most of my flock with a .22 rifle, ran out of bullets so ran at it trying to club the thing to death with the rifle screaming like a wild man. Think I ended up removing ever weasel in a 10 mile radius...I do what I must for my 'kids'. So call me a psycho LOL...I've seen much much worse.
Too bad no one captured that scene and posted it on YouTube! You'd have surely gone viral and gained much fame! Did you...ever kill the weasel?

I read all of the posts. I can relate to everyone. My husband is the type that knows everything. Whenever I make a decision it's the wrong way to do something and he has the better way. Many times he is right but there are also times when both ways still result in the same outcome, it's just the way we do it is different. We have been together nearly 50 years. Everyone is different. To keep the peace I just listen to him and most of the time do things the way he want's them done. There are times though when I do something the way I think it should be done and the outcome is the same and he doesn't know the difference. I like to keep the peace. Most of the time you can't change someone's personality so you just have to let them learn even if it's a wrong/different way. You can suggest and maybe they will listen. One way I found that works well is to ask the person, what do you think about this or that. It's kind of like making a suggestion without really telling them what or how to do something.
