Why is my chicken’s eye swollen shut

1972F630-1FD0-4D2C-AE3E-9D1A05258BD1.jpeg Now all 4 of my chickens that are in the main coop are sick. I got one girl who’s eye just swelled up big time yesterday evening. I’m treating all of them with the eye ointment & Tylan 50. My little Roo’s eyes look better but he is now sneezing a high pitches squeal type sound. This is breaking my heart. I don’t know what else to do for them. I’ve decided to keep them in their coop/run because one of my girls (the one who’s eye swelled up) hid from me all day yesterday and I couldn’t get to her to treat her until she came to roost. I don’t think she has eaten in 2 days. I’ll post a pic of her eye in case you have any more ideas of how to get the swelling down.

I do have a call into our local vet here who I just found out will see chickens. I wanted to see if they could maybe test to see exactly what it is and maybe give them some kind of boost shot or something. I don’t know.

I have another question I can’t find an answer to. How long to quarantine? I have another flock that is 3 months old in another coop. My concern is they free range the same property. I’ve left them closed up today because I’m starting to panic. Should I keep them closed up too? If so, how long?

Update:
I was able to get our Orpington into the vet we have here and he was able to relieve her abscess and he gave us an antibiotic powder to put in their water that he said will work better for them. I’m excited to find out that we have a local poultry vet and I’m looking forward to when my flock feels better!

Sorry that I did not see your earlier post yesterday. Glad that you were able to see a vet, and that you have medicine for the water. Is it Tylan powder or something else? Was there a pus plug in your chicken’s eye? Is there a bad odor around the sick birds’ faces? Does the vet think it is MG, coryza, or something else? They can do testing. It is nerve racking when you have some chickens with a respiratory disease, while having another younger flock nearby. The chickens who have the disease will probably be carriers for life for whatever disease they have. So you may see some sickness in the younger ones eventually. I would keep the sick birds isolated from the younger ones until they no longer have any symptoms. Sometimes there are more than one disease present, such as infectious bronchitis or something else. Here is a good link to read about the common respiratory diseases such as infectious bronchitis, MG, coryza, and ILT:

No worries!! You have been so helpful!

The powder he gave me is Pennchlor 64. He did not mention a pus plug and neither one of us smelled a bad odor. To my knowledge he did not run a test, just did an exam. Her eye looked good and clear. He did not say what specific "disease" it was. I have the bigs and littles separated in their own coops. He was comfortable with keeping the littles closed up for a week to let the bacteria on the ground go away. The bigs will be allowed out once they have a week of no symptoms.

Everyone is doing much better today!

Thank you for the article and all of your advice!
