Why would someone do this???

What a terrible thing to happen! I agree with the other posts; call the sheriff/police so that a report can be filed. The perps may (I hate to say this) come back or have done this to someone else (or will in the future), and this may aid in catching them. I purchased a game cam from Walmart online to set up after my coop is built; I found the info on the forum from a fellow BYCer: Bluey's Game Cam Thread
I also like the idea of the baby monitor that mediazeal suggested; I think I will try that, too. I'm in town, and I'm afraid the two-legged predators will be my main problem. I hope more of your birds will show up.

First things first- I am so so sorry for what you are going through and for the lose of your birds.

1) call the sheriff or police, and tell them someone broke into your barn last night and most of your birds are missing.

2) Install a camera (I believe you said this isn't the first time this has happened)

3) Install a motion light or two

4) get a padlock for the doors.

5) buy a sign that says " private property, no tresspassing"

If I think of anything I will make sure to add it. Again I am sorry for your losses.

Someone else said it, but I will reiterate the point: put in a motion-detection camera and file a report. You will want to rebuild because that's just the way we humans are and I think that's easier to do when you feel like you can protect yourself. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. For this instance, a gun would have done you no good. You are going to shoot at kids? Not in this day and age. Get a picture. It's way more powerful.
I would also consider the point that all this happened and no one in your house heard a thing. Your barn is either quite a ways away or in an auditory dead zone. Perhaps you might consider hooking a buzzer up to your barn doors that sound off in the house when they are opened. Doesn't need to make a sound out in the barn, but it would give you an auditory clue in the house that someone is opening those doors.
Just my thoughts...

Can you report this to someone? If there is suspicion that someone has been on your property and stealing/harming animals this is a crime. I am so sorry to hear what you have been through.

You're exactly right!!! Oh that makes me mad!! How dare someone intentially harm an innocent animal! Ughh! Deranged folks in this world, I'm afraid...

Please do get a motion camera, so you can at least have proof of what is going on. I've got a baby monitor here, and I'm going to put that in my coop tonight! Have thought of it after reading posts on this forum, but haven't done it yet.

We moved here last year, and I've been told that about 1.5-2 miles down the road there are pit bull fighting matches!!! And also heard someone has an abandoned old house that they raise SNAKES in! Both would love to have my chickens I'm sure. Especially if times get worse and they need to feed those animals.

Oh my... now I'm getting scared.

Hugs for your loss, and I hope the rest are hiding under a building, or bush somewhere, and will come back once they calm down.
