Why would someone do this???

I took my Boston Terrier out with me and told her to help me find the babies. While I was following feather trails, she brought back 2 white rocks, 2 barred rocks, and 2 of the babies, and my female guinea! They followed her back to the barn.

I also found my blue andalusian hen near the orchard under a rock. How she got under a rock I have no idea, unless someone killed her.

In the meantime, I found my Wellsummer pullet. I was happy about that.

So, what I am missing are my Wellsummer roo, Blue Andalusian roo, white rock pullet, my EE roo, and 11 assorted babies. So, the damage isn't quite as bad as I thought, but I am devastated about the EE roo and my little buff polish baby. I am hoping the babies show up eventually. I'll take the dog back out later when it isn't so hot, and she's fed the puppies!

We have a motion light. You can see it from the house. The barn sits back behind the house about 25 ft. That is what I don't understand. Why didn't we hear anything. Also, I am sure it was early this morning, because of how many birds came to the front of the house. It is pitch black out here at night. They would have had to have some light. DH was cleaning the pool about 12:30 am, and everything was locked up. I didn't get up til 8:30, because I've been in the hospital and recuperating. I locked them up last night about 7pm.

I guess maybe I should go into town and file a report. Just to have it on file. We have motion/night vision cameras. They are in the living room in the box where they've been for 2 months since DH bought them. Right next to the locks for the doors he never changed out.

Thanks everyone,

Hey Sharon, I've got my one lone Wellsummer hen, now. Waiting to see if the roo or the Andalusian roo come back. Looks like I only lost one white one. The pullet, of course! This is really disheartening.

Thanks so much,

Shelly

Sorry if I sound blunt or gruff, but I would have booted my hubby's butt by now hehe

I think it is a good idea to file a report, so it's on file. I hope you find your other babies!

Oh wow, how scary!!

Try one of those thick U-shaped bike locks. A good one will cost over $30. Unless someone wants to spend an hour with a hand saw they won't get through one of those! We locked our driveway gate with one in our old house after we got a bunch of stuff stolen from our yard.

Maybe a 6 foot chain link with razor wire running the top would be a good idea too!

Geeze, that is just so scary, I'm so sorry!

I would definitely file a police report. That way if they come back & you catch them, they are liable (and you have proof of) both crimes. If you really suspect the neighbors for what ever reason, I would also communicate that to the police. If they check into it and find feathers or even just ask questions, they may take it more seriously in the future.

I'm sorry this happened to your flock

How horrible. I am so so sorry for your losses.

I would not go to town to file...call them, take tons of pictures but make them come out and look for themselves.

Get a camera out there for sure and be ready to protect your property and flock with a friend... Smith & Wesson, Glock, Sig, Browning or whoever of those category you know.

Get those no trespassing signs up pronto.

Gosh this is a horrible thing when people come onto your property in the dead of night to damage, steal and kill animals.

Edit- almost forgot this in reference to this statement "DH really could care less".... that would be the bigger problem for me. If something like that happened to mine and I am upset, I expect him to be concerned and somewhat sympathetic over the situation, especially if it was an intruder that close to our home and my kids during the night. He is lucky to have you because if it were me...he would be packing for a few nights in a hotel.

Agreed.

My hubby isn't really into the whole chicken thing either, but if something like that were to happen here he'd better show some concern over
A - Something that is important to me.
B - The safety of our home and our other pets.

I hope you are able to find more chikie babies!

Luck and best wishes sent your way.

I agree with everything you said except what is in quotes above. A Person's home is their castle. They have a right to defend their house or property with lethal force legally. That's why they call those laws related to this The Castle Doctrine's. Texas, Oklahoma and Florida have especially well spelled out laws pertaining to this. Gun Control Advocates call this the Shoot First laws, but honestly, someone who breaks into somebodys house, barn whatever with intent to commit a felony isn't probably too far from coming after the homeowners themselves.

Who knows, the OP, her kids and family might be the next target in the house. Be prepared for everything ALWAYS!
