Wild pigs

Didn't the Spanish raised the hogs for a special kind of meat/curing...all I can remember in one episode, they find the wild pigs in acorn farms and they would kill them specifically for their meat. I bet they do taste gooooooood!

We have lots of feral pigs and they can be a real problem in many ways. At night on rural roads many are hit by cars and they are plenty big to do damage to cars. As for your lawn, forget it. If a group of feral pigs discover your lawn it is gone in an hour. Here in Florida it is open season and shooting them is encouraged. When I do see them anywhere near my property I shoot them and my neighbor butchers them. I have had the ribs and sausage and it was good. Where we are is the center of the orange groves and a group of feral pigs will cause a great deal of damage to the trees. Around here everyone will shoot them on sight and a lot of people hunt them.

If more people would hunt them and eat them they would not be a problem. If you refuse to hunt them and not eat them you really should not complain or let folks that want to hunt them not hunt them on your land then do not complain. They are the #1 game animal in California and big business.

let's see:

feral hogs carry diseases that spread easily to livestock: Various diseases of wild hogs include pseudorabies, swine brucellosis, tuberculosis, bubonic plague, tularemia, hog cholera, foot and mouth disease, and anthrax. Internal parasites include kidney worms, stomach worms, round worms and whipworms. Liver flukes and trichinosis are also found in hogs. External parasites include dog ticks, fleas and hog lice.

They also have razor sharp tusks and will fight if cornered or wounded.

They destroy property and leave habitat unsuitable for livestock and other wildlife. They reproduce rapidly and can live as long as 8 years.

OH, and the main reason to shoot them is that everyone loves bacon!

You should see the damage these feral pigs have done along just 3 miles of road where I live in Califorinia. It looks like a plow has torn up acres of land. I've seen more than 20 in one group! This year on just the 3 miles of road I've seen at least 5 dead (hit by cars) this fall alone. Imagine the damage done to the vehicles.... these are BIG pigs. They are NOT native and are said to be hybrid/feral decendants of "Russian Blacks" that were released on a local ranch for hunting. Now they're spreading everywhere and are smart, vicious (watch your kids), and very distructive to property. I have no issues at all with the idea of legally hunting them...these pigs are a big problem here.

I completely agree that they are an invasive species. They've torn up the ground so bad, and I'm pretty sure they like it up there and aren't moving on anytime soon. My dad and uncle went up last weekend and didn't get any but then again I cant really see the 2 guys being quiet. We talked about the need for them to get someone up there asap and my aunt knew a couple guys in town and we all know someone who wants to shoot pigs of course.

There's about 600 acres of this.. Hopefully they're not tearing up all the natural grasses to let thisle and other bad seeds sprout.

Many are offspring of swine brought here by the Spaniards. They used them as a mobile food supply. Of course when they slaughter the Indian tribes the pigs ate the bodies of the dead. Want a good read try W. Michael and Kathleen O'Neal Gear's Contact: The Battle for America series for details.
