Im getting four new bantam silkie chicks tomarrow (2 black, 2 splash) and they are two weeks old. Will the hens (if I get any) lay by spring? And how long will they lay? Will they lay year round?

Th an ks in advance!

I don't raise silkies, but as I understand it, they take quite a while to start laying. And once they do start laying, they won't be the most reliable layers as they are a breed known to go broody often. (going broody means they want to hatch babies and they don't lay eggs during this time)

Im mostly getting mine for broodies to sit on duck eggs. But I would also like to hatch some silkies next year

Lay a clutch, go broody, raise the chicks - and repeat as many times as you can in a season.

That's the silky motto. Production birds they are not. For your intended purpose, they will be great.

Mine start in April and lay until it starts getting cooler in about September. Mine generally don't lay in the winter or fall.
