**Will it be illegal to grow my own food? WHAT????**

It SOUNDS like they are talking about people who sell food, however, it is NOT stated. I'll be danged if someone is gonna come on my property and tell me they need to inspect my garden and coops.

I haven't read it yet. But I did just read about a govt. program that is helping individuals set up to produce food locally. Fresher, less expensive (shipping costs), and better foods. Low/no interest loans if you produce any kind of food that is sold ONLY locally. I've been trying to get in touch with my county extension agent to find out what I need to do to raise meat birds.

At the risk of sounding insensitive, I don't think the government has any constitutional right to do that, either. I'd guesstimate that about 99.999999% of all Federal legislation is in fact illegal by the Constitution (which I have two copies of).

My thoughts? The Feds need to butt out almost completely. What with genetically altered crops and horrible chicken conditions, I think small farms and locally grown food represent a very strong, independent market that can fare very well against Big Agra without government aid.

Gotta love the free market!

Maybe I'm missing it. I don't see anything there that tell me anything. I can't read what it is all about. I think I heard something about this here while back, but haven't got what it is all about.

Holy freakin' crap. I just glanced at the bill, and saw at least a dozen instances of such vague wording that the Feds could get away with nearly anything! Granted, it was the summary, but the bill itself will inevitably provide even more opportunities!

Well- I don't see anywhere that they'll even vote on this, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with home grown food. From what I have seen, states are encouraging people to buy locally grown goods.

This MIGHT be a reaction from the major food industry. There is a current crusade, not so much against these companies, but FOR local, fresh food- especially in schools.

From reading the summary, it appears that the regulations will only apply if you SELL and package produce, not prevent people from growing their own foods. I know this thread is going to turn political - please don't go there.

Imagine passing a law stating what you can or cannot eat. It's ludicrous. I will buy or sell whatever the heck I want, to people who are willing to buy or sell those products. Jaw droppingly stupid, the government needs to GTFO.

My friend that sent me this link did so because she knows that I grow herbs and plants that are useful in keeping people healthy. The context of this bill that she thought would interest me (besides the obvious that should interest all of us) was that 'supplements' are considered food and if you read the complete text of the bill it goes on to refer to other statutes that give definitions that even make this more complicated. I think the FDA couldn't give a rats fuzzy patoote about little farmer's market tomatoes, but I do think they are VERY interested in getting control of 'supplements' and those are defined (in the purposes of this bill) as 'food'. The drug industry has lots of money backing it and it moves the political machines like nothing else I've seen. My purpose in posting this is just to bring light to the subject and give anyone time to contact their legislators before this monster with many heads gets out of the pen...
