Windham Maine TSC Farm Days- NEXT DATE: JULY 28TH!

Hey there, despite the tag, I thought I'd introduce myself here. My family is moving to Cumberland Center, and I really hope we will be there for this meet up! I think we are going to be selling our coop and chickens down here in NJ rather than transport them. Then we will buy a coop once we know where we are going to put it.

Also, since I am a USDA CAT II accredited vet, what would you guys think of me setting up a table and doing CVI's and Health Certs at something like this? I am not licensed and accredited in ME, yet, but, if this is the sort of service that would be useful, I could become licensed and accredited.
Welcome to Maine!

I honestly don't know what a CVI or a Health Cert. would include, but I imagine it would be a welcome addition. Maybe someone else on here can jump in and help out with that question? I generally feel that more variety of farm related stuff we can offer at a swap, the better!

As for the upcoming swap, I will have 4-5 barnyard mix chickens there that will be about 12wks old. I MAY also have some week old chicks there. Of course those have to go in groups of 6 or more, so it kind of depends on how the hatch goes the weekend before

The gentleman with the coops will be back for this go round as well and is looking for a couple of goats...I am not a goat person myself so I cant remember what breed he said he wanted. But I do remember he said they are the kind that stay the smallest....

Widget, will you be back for this one too? Everyone will be looking for Sam!

I had to look this up.
What is a CVI?‎: What is a "Certificate of Veterinary Inspection"? (AbbreviatedCVI; sometimes incorrectly called a "Health Certificate") (of course I couldn't open this google search so that is all I could see)

wouldn't you have to take board exams for maine to be licensed?
[FONT=arial, sans-serif]from all the swaps I have attended, I don't know that it would be profitable for you,not many birds/animals from swaps this far from the border leave maine and would need CVIs.
will you be working as a vet here in maine? I know dr hoeng our state vet is leaving in september. are you his replacement?

Not sure if I will have anything to bring. Right now I know I have one Red Jungle Fowl roo since he has started to crow. The other one also looks like a roo but isn't crowing yet. There is a third but that one is a month younger so no idea on the gender. I might decide to part with a couple Australorp pullets too. All will be at least three months old for the swap. Then there are the ducks. I really need to thin out that part of the flock. Will know more the middle of next week after I move them to the adult quarters. But if Sam's admirers are requesting her presence then I guess we will have to show up.

Thanks for the info...

A CVI/Health Cert/USDA7001 is what you need to transfer livestock from one owner to another a lot of the time, and from one state to another, regardless of ownership transfer.

I am not Dr. Hoenig's replacement, but, I've been told I should apply! That kind of vet work is right up my alley. To be licensed in ME, I have to send the licensing board money. Maine is nice and takes the experience you have from other state's and allows licensing directly after a certain number of years experience. Better than say Jersey which requires a jurisprudence exam with a 50% fail rate!

Anyone here involved in the More Maine Meat project?

Frizzles!! :) I would love to find some (still) but so far have only found some that were more than 2 hours from me... too hot for that kind of drive IMO.

We also are trying to get some bigger laying hens. We are down to one who lays large brown eggs and two little girls laying tiny white ones. Boy what a difference from 2 months ago when we were getting 7 or 8 a day. **** coons :( We are more secure now than we were the first time, but still lost our favorite barred rock and two new little bantys while it was light out. A fox we think this time. Poor chickens are wishing we'd let them free range, but now I'm scared for them. We have a small movable pen for them now, better than nothing I suppose.

Hmmm. I really don't need anything.

. But if something catches my eye I would certainly want it.

Silkies are certainly on my list. Along with a call drake since I have two ducks now. Muscovies of any color. On the off chance someone has Saxony ducks I would love some more.

I really don't have anything to sell. I should thin out the ducks, even though I am on the lookout for some, so I might bring a few. I think I have two Saxony drakes. If I do I might bring one. And if I am correct on the breed I do have a couple of Khaki Campbell ducks. There are a couple more that I am not sure on the breed that I might bring if I can figure out what they are. For chickens I may be persuaded to part with a couple of Black Australorp pullets who will be about 10 weeks old at the time of the swap.

Or I can just bring Sam and charge $1 a pat, $2 to brush her and $5 to take her for a walk.

If something catches your eye... funny... I wanted to buy all of them at the last swap (my first BTW) Love the dog thing too, nothing like bringing the entertainment with you!

so far i have heard from another family bringing some chicks ( i think they
may havesome silkies Widget!) and i will be there with a few chickens for sale. i was hoping to have a few more bantam mixes to bring along but none of the eggs i set were fertile. i have 6 full size barnyard mix eggs in there, but with the 6 chicks under 8 wks law, i am not sure i will be bringing them. the man with the coops will be back as well, an i am really really hoping som more folks will be there as wel. we seemed to have a pretty good turnout for our first one, was really hoping to see it pick up!

oh yes, i cant forget Sam! she will be there to entertain everyone :)
