Tan ran over to the pot to make sure nobody had stolen any of it and went back to Red.
"Yes, but first we wet and smash it, then roll it, to get good cordage."

Red picked up a rock and started grinding the vines. "How do we get them into thin threads? Is there something we could run the fibres through?"
Soft footsteps faded away into the night outside and a barely audible beating of wings heralded the departure of Red's mysterious visitor.

Tan perked up and thought she heard something, but calmed down afterwards. "Nah, we just pound it to a mash, wash it in water, to remove the juices and expose the fibers, then roll it!"

Something pipped in a low voice from a distance away. Red pipped back.
"So basically we take away the flesh and leave all the spiny stuff? Great." She put the pipe down into the bore and poured out a basin of water for washing, lowering the vines inside.

"Yep!" Clucked Tan, thinking that the piping creature was just another night bird.

Red ground the vines slowly, deep in thought. The pipping outside began again in an irregular rhythm: code. Red listened, but made no reply. "Okay, I've done a few, how do we twine them?"

"Eh? Oh a friend of mine, looking for me." She smiled, and held up the bits of twine.

"Oh, okay." Clucked Tan. "We just have to find a flat surface and roll it, twisting it into twine."

Okay, good. I did as he said, kept suspiscion levels down. Red pointed over to a large surface of rock probably smoothed by previous flooding. "How about this?" She took a few strands and began neatly twining them together.

"Ah, yes, that's a good one. You're doing a good job!" Clucked Tan, stirring the soup.

Soon, a long length of twine had been shaped, doubled back on itself several time across the flat expanse of rock. "it's ready!" Red announced, tying one end to the winch and the other to the water pipe.
