Wire under a run

I am building a new chicken house and run. I've got 10 new chickens but I want may want to have 12 - 15 some day so I'm building the coup 6'X8'. The run is also going to be 6'X8' and I'm wondering about keeping critters out of the run. Has anyone put the welded wire mesh on the bottom of the run and then put a few inches of dirt back over it so the chickens can scratch and get at buts and such? Thanks in advance for any help on this question!
