I know someone in Arkansaw who bought a pair of Millie Fleur cochins from me. She has tons of chickens to. Very nice. She had to get rid of all her guinees though because they kept going over to the neighbors car dealership and jumping on the cars.

Gotta stay in good standing with the neighbors!

I read an article in BYPmag that said quail can be a good money making 'hobby' if you can get resteraunts to buy the birds. Sounds like a lot of cleaning and butchering to me.

Pie crust lard question?

Terri (and others, too), what kind of lard do you use in your pie crust? I've never bought lard and the only veg. shortening I have I bought for soap making years ago. So this set me off on a quest for information on lard on the internet last night and it was an interesting topic to learn about. (Never heard of Leaf lard before nor did I know rendered chicken fat can be used for pie crusts, too!) Apparently the best lard is lard you render yourself (where can I buy lard to do this?) or second -- refrigerated lard which is nonhydrenated (sp) and last would be unrefrigerated lard which has been modified so it doesn't spoil as fast. Apparently some lards can leave a meaty flavor so I want to avoid that. So, if any of you have a favorite lard brand or source or other information as to where to buy the best lard, could you please share it with this novice? I've always used butter before but I really want to try TO's recipe.

Carol, your new birds sound wonderful! Oh, BTW, I don't live in Monona - it's actually a Madison area next to Monona. I'd be game for a SO quick meetup on the 14th (?) should the local BYCers decide to get together for a meet & greet.

good morning, TO, I just saw that you included quail in your original count.. yes, ALL the birds are outside.. sure improves the atmosphere inside, smellwise..

we just have the cockatiel inside.. Nobody has had the guts to let her out of the cage , yet.. but she is getting friendlier each day.. I really get a bang out of her.. our timer on the stove just beeps, beeps, beeps.. sometimes you can not hear it from the living room.. but the bird answers it beeps, so we know it is going off.. she also answers the squeek of one of the cupboard doors.. and she hears when a car door slams outside..

today is going to be catsup experimental day.. I have two recipes picked out.. I am going to rewrite them to make one and print it out from the computer.. If anyone has any recommendations for catsup, let me know..

this first batch is going to be a small one,, 4 pints finished ..

No more large dogs mouths to feed. Go thru quite a bit of food with the two Great Pyreneese and chocolate lab.

DH ET just came in and asked me to guess who I thought jumped the pasture (drylot) fence ? I said the Pony ? Nope, My 2000 lb Belgian !!!! She must have been chased. She managed to bust a few insulators. She was out munching on grass ! Luckily she was only out for 15 min or so so I don't have to worry about her eating to much fresh grass !!! Never a dull moment !!! He already fixed the fence. I didn't think she would have cleared it without hitting it. She doesn't strike me as a jumper !!!

The pony on the other hand Yes. Checked her out and no injuries TG.

Montana, my Blue & Gold is swearing up a storm this morning !!! Wonder where he learned that !!

Snappie one of my African Grey parrots keep asking "Are You up?" My living room is seperate from DH ET's Family room (we watch different tv programs) and I always call into there asking if he is UP !!!

I really should breed my African Greys and make some serious money !!!! But I don't want to put the stress on them, I value them to much !!! Gave them some fresh corn on the cob last night !!

My cockatiel Punkin Head is around 20 yrs old. I remember when I lived at my first house when he heard the door knob turn he would start squaking before the dogs even knew someone was coming in the door. That was when I didn't lock the doors !!! Dumb !!
My Mom really liked him. She would go up to his cage and ask him what MaMa did all day and he would answer "Chip chip chip chip !" You can still ask him that to this day and he will answer !!! You can ask him for a kiss and he will give you a kiss noise.
Funny, with all of the crowing around here that my African Greys haven't started crowing !! But supposedly they will only mimmick sounds they like, guess they don't like roosters !!! Jealous maybe ????

Oh, wanted to say thanks to Amy, Cind, BBP, Shanti for helping out on the Boys VS Girls last night !!! We Beat the boys !!! I was battling Outdoorsman and Gaited Horse the other night by myself. Then Outdoorsman left so it was just the two of us. It went on for quite some time !!! Finally we just called it Quits.
We should set a time to get on and whoop the boys !!! That was fun !!!

Last night I made some fresh salsa and got all settled in to watch the first episode of Desperate Housewives. Turned the TV on and there was college football !! I asked Chuck what day it was ???? Saturday !!!!

If I had remembered it was Saturday I would have made cabbage head for supper !!! That takes a while.
I'll have to share that recipe with you all. It's Danish Cabbage Head, but as a kid we called it Yellow stuff and White stuff. I still call it that to this day. It was my Dads and My favorite. I would take it over a steak dinner anyday !!

I'll post it later when I have more time and my wits about me !!

Ok, off to see what the boys vs girls are up to!!!

Actually I didnt go out there to see if the bird was OK--I will wait until it stops pouring and then take a look. Not much can be done if she got it good anyhow...

I think I have about 15 eggs left in the bator...wonder if they will all hatch? Gotta watch the youtube video again....wont be long now! There is a woman on the canning thread and in her blog she was talking about quail. She showed a picture of a 13x9 pan of them waiting to go into the oven...there were about 10 in there!

For her family of 4...good thing they grow fast!

Carol...on Tuesday wanna help me with bumblefoot surgery? My fam is terrible about helping (with anything it seems)and I need someone to be "the assistant." If you have time I would appreciate it! Bring pork if you want to do some trading too...

Gotta work on the coffee pot today; it lets up know when it needs to be vinegared out...only makes 2 cups and then shuts itself off! You have to stand there and press start 6 times to get a whole pot...yup--time to vinegar! Good thing I am stocked up on that from canning...
Who said they have apples lying about? Cind? I need to do mine too. I still have pears and apples and now fruit flies!!! Probably should get at them today since it doesnt appear I will be trying out the come-a-long and building the rest of my fence...darn rain! DH is going to a friend's place to watch the game (I hope) so his carcass will be out of here....I should be able to get something accomplished!

I have steaks, a ham, lots of sausage and pork chops.
It will be in the afternoon, i have to help a friend around 10 a.m. to move her horses from one pasture to another, she is close by so not too bad...
