Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

evening all,

I now understand why people complain about muddy coops, the chickens pretty much destroyed the grass in their run. I am hoping to plant some seeds and cover it up with grass clippings this weekend in hopes of having grass next year. chickens are doing great, we are getting an egg from each one daily and are giving away more eggs than we can eat. I have been half way thinking about getting some hatching eggs next spring and incubating a few slw. I feel sorry for my lone one, she is ostrisized by the golden comets. I have to get an incubator, hopefully they will go on sale this fall.

stay dry everyone

David

I wanted to show you guys a picture of my beautiful isabel project orpington pullet. No doubt she will be the next bird killed when a predator comes but I'll be breeding her to a lavender rooster and probably start hatching eggs in March. I planned on putting her with a lavender mottled roo, but he turned into hawk food

She's got great feather quality. I'm excited!

Hi again...just got all the critters to bed...soon it will be me! Jim--the ribs sound great! I'll be right over.....THe modern games must be dubbed because that is what the standard calls for. (just checked my SOP and it says that those undubbed are disqualified) Think of it as similar to the ears on a Great Dane or the Poodle's tail...that is what is "recognized." Many things on dogs are being reconsidered, I wonder if it will happen with chicken standards as well? I guess only if people complain about it being cruel and inhumane. I certainly will not be showing them...although I certainly wouldnt mind having a few around the farm!
David...you have now been introduced to "chicken mud." There is nothing like it anywhere...it is just purely nasty stuff!
sickbyc.gif

I was just saying to DH tonight, "we need to get some gravel for the dooryard." Now if I can only find a spare 400 bucks....guess I'll be sliding around in mud for a while yet!
Just figured out which one of my worthless dogs is pulling stuff down from the counter...they all srand around and wait and then devour anything that comes down...darn dogs!
OK--Time for me to wash up and get to bed...DH says it is rain around here FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK!!!!! AArrgh! I might not make it until Friday!
I might just dream about MUD! Terri O

hi again, I have been waiting around for some posts.. naturally, TO and I are here together..

Dave, the only way you are going to have grass in your runs is to have alternate runs.. use one while the others are recuperating.. OR; build a grid on the ground so that the chickens cannot get at the ground.. the grass can grow up through the wire.. Your run is small enough to do that..

TO, I cannot equate cutting off chickens ears to trimming a dog's ears or tail.. neither is natural ,, who ever came up with that rule ?? dog's tails originally were cut off to prevent them from thrashing them bloody while hunting in dense brush.. there was a purpose for it.. but cutting off wattle, combs, and EARS on a chicken makes no sense what-so-ever.. unless you are grooming them as fighting cocks.. then the practice should be banned,,, not accepted... If the explanation is to change their looks, then get a different kind of chicken with a different look..no cutting necessary...eh?

I wonder how the mods on byc feel about that practice ? when we are not even allowed to say "fighting cock" in our conversation?

this just came to me on another site:

HI there is a SMALL ANIMAL AUCTION every month in Stratford. I know it is the first Saturday of every month. It is a well run auction (a little slow paced but well run). There are always tons of Rabbits for super cheap prices as well as chickens and even some exotic animals.

It is held at the stratford EQUITY AUCTION BARN. it is usually listed under the wausau craigslist farm and garden.
(just North of town)

the next one is OCTOBER 1. IT USUALLY STARTS AT 10 AM

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE

SEE YA'LL THERE SATURDAY

Sorry TO. Didn't mean to confuse, but I'm good at that. Lol! I meant you should complain about your expensive boots that are borderline dangerous. I would think with a name like The Muck Boot Co. that they would do well in the mud, not almost put you on your keester. Slipping on ice is one thing, but mud? That's just wrong, especially for a pair of boots. I know what you mean about this weather making you want to sleep. I did not want to crawl out of bed this morning. And the girls let me know just what they thought of that, too.

Cind, Thursday works for me. So far. I hope.

SweetFolly, so good to hear from you. Awwww, love your new babies! Does the white kitty have an orange striped tail? They're so sweet. Wow, did Boo ever get big! He sure is good looking. What breed is he?

Deb, there are quite a few shelters that will list if the dogs are good with cats & vice versa. The humane society in Milw. has a personality profile that they assign their dogs to help you find a match to your lifestyle/characteristics.

I made homemade chicken veggie noodle soup today, TO, with my leftover chicken carcass. (Sound tasty, Jim?)

With all this damp, wet, yucky weather, it really warmed the bones. Our bones, as well as the carci's.

Raim, I think I used to work with your mom.

I freeze my apples peeled, cored & sliced.

I make more crisps than pies, though, and they don't stay in the freezer for very long. They get used up really quick around here during the winter, especially around the holidays.
BBP, why do you live so far away?

I would absolutely love to have some chicks from your future orp project. Your pullet is a beauty! I just love those blue/lavender colors.

I have two lavender orpingtons that I plan on breeding and one maybe 2 blacks. I think one lavender is a roo for sure and maybe a black. Reason I say the black is maybe a roo is because I'm not sure if it is an orpington !!!

CC I am going to remember you !!!! I have one lavender ameraucana that not sure of the sex yet too. The guy I bought the eggs from owes me 12 more eggs and I emailed him Friday about it and he hasn't answered yet.

My one and only lavender silkie chick I got from Ideal is looking to be a roo !!! I had one from them that looked very very nice. Of course it died !!!
Still don't know what my bantam cochins are. I'm starting to think mostly roosters AGAIN. Only a few have smaller combs and wattles !!! They all seem to be so bright red though. My first cochins so not sure. Weird !!! I mean what are my chances of getting 9 out of 9 roos? Stupid question, for me very good chance !!

SIS, I know what you mean by cabbage rolls etc. What makes this different is that you stuff the whole cabbage and what makes it so different is the white sauce and butter. I'm not talkin about just a little bit. I'm talking about SMOTHERING it with both !!!
Ya gatta really try to know what I mean. People say, Oh Pigs in a blanket etc. Ah No, not even close !!
The secret in the white sauce is to add the cabbage water.

I'm going to have to buy cabbages, deer ate them all but a small small head after DH peeled the chewed up leaves away.

So any more news about the bash. I'm not sure will be making it if it is in Lake Mills. Problem is I will be driving down to Racine most likely Thursday 250 mile trip, then to Madison Friday 200 mile trip. Then if I go back Saturday that is another 175 miles. I think I will be to beat to make it not to mention all the gas.
I'm still planning on stopping by your place Carol to see your critters, ponys, horses etc. and to bring TO that dom Roo.
Anyway, got my new DVD from th Giddyupflix today so gonna go watch it.
DH starts his new job tomorrow but not until 10am so I will have to get up and finish some of his chores tomorrow. Suppose to Rain all week here too !!! FUN !!

Just wanted to share pics of the chickens I got, they are all in QT for a while... and one of the frizzles was sneezing tonight.. time to start antibiotics...
REALLY.. the white silkie had mites, and now the frizzles are sneezing?? The silkie came from a "big time breeder/importer" she had a huge price tag on an "imported" painted silkie..
(a color type)
HOW do people get these birds into a show/swap?? Why do they bring them?
I really really wish the people who check the NPIP papers would check the birds too...
Jimny crickets...
H&R's son's hens and roosters are in with them.. d@mn it~~

Not pictured are the frizzle and normal chicks, the white and cuckoo or barred silkie.. I have to get a pic of her. And the silkie chicks.

Wow That sucks !! Looks like you'll have to give them all antibiotic hey?
Yep good old northern fowl mites right ? Silkies are known for them but why in the H3LL don't people dust their birds before they bring them to the swaps? Is it that they don't care or just plain igorance ??? Makes you wonder !!
Cute birds otherwise. What is the one in the bottom picture ?
