Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I fed a bunch of apples to the chickens yesterday. They really like them. Also some bread and lettuce. They sure make a ruckus when they get 'treats' . It cute to watch. They all run around and start screaming and yelling and dancing and getting all excited. lol

Everytime my dog sees a deer in the field she barks at it. I cant get her to stop. There is a guy who is bow hunting in the trees on 'our' land and I am trying to get Tiger to chill out with that. I keep her inside when I see his truck here. There are a lot of turkeys running around too but I havent caught any yet.

I tried sneaking up on them but they are just too crafty.

DrH glad you like your new tractor.

When 'we'(me and DH>no longer) lived in a log cabin down by Independence and the kids were little, we burned with wood. Half the time we had the windows open in the middle of the winter. I remember the first year we got the wood burner we were out there cutting downed trees and burning them the same day. What an experience that was. Talk about procrastination. ha The good ole days.

My neighbor, the old man, burns pallets all winter. I am almost tempted to buy him a cord of slab wood. He is the one that likes to feed Tiger all his old stuff from the freezer.

Another beautiful day today. I should go out and get some more winter stuff done before its too late. A tired today. Well I better push myself and do it anyway. Will feel better that way.

I never knew so many had the little seramas. I finally figured out who the daddy was that sired my little half serama chick. It is a bantam partridge wyandotte. That little chick is Small too. Really cute. His feathers are really getting pretty. Gotta love those mixes. It helps when they are small too.

Have a Lovely afternoon. Everyone.

Hello Everyone,

I have several Chickens available. They are all young Cockerels that I purchased (they were supposed to be Pullets!) and had mailed in from all over the Country. I don't want to keep any males, just my hens and Pullets. I also don't want to see them go to be butchered. I have "Hornet" a lovely Coronation Sussex from "Rare Chicks" in Florida. He is all Greenfire Farm Bloodlines and quite impressive. The next two are "Olive Eggers" from Chicken Scratch Farm in Southern Illinois. I'm almost certain that both of them are Cockerels. One is for sure, but I heard the second crowing and flapping wings this am. "Khaki" is brilliant black with an irridescent green sheen and "Olive" is black with white feathers, a beard and a muff. They are from Black Copper Marans X Americauna crosses. I'm also suspicious about one of my young white Silkies from an Exhibition Breeder in Wisconsin Rapids. I've heard one of them crowing and am fairly certain they are not all Pullets

Prices are reasonable, however, I must add that I vaccinated all of them for Mareks Disease since I had once of my Marans contract Mareks over the summer months.

Celtic Chick:
Testing for Celiac: there are several blood tests that can be done but are not always accurate. I was very skeptical, so insisted on a endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis (Perhaps was in denial as well?) Most common symptoms are headaches, upset stomach, bloating stomach etc-she had none of these (probably due to being diagnosed early on). Now if she has gluten she can end up pretty sick for 24 hrs.

Also, it was me asking about the bunnies being in with the chickens. The chickens are scared of "Itty bit" (the rabbit) even though hes pretty tiny. Ive taken to letting him out in the run with them when Im around. Thanks for the pic!!

Gentle Afternoon All... I have to announce that all 3 blue women layed today. I get a couple blue eggs a day, but today all 3 did the correct thing. They just gotta be happy pullets.

Great pic CC. Nothing like everyone getting along.

Did you mention how the venzun turned out TO!

I ended up with 7 feed bags packed tight with shavings, plus the young men got a fresh pile in their pen.

Later... bigz

There is no doubt in my mind that if I put a rabbit in with my chickens they would kill it. I've watched my lavenders chase down squirrels and have seen them kill and eat mice. I came home one day to my duck and a few chickens with blood dripping from their mouths and the duck had blood splattered all over her chest. Not sure what they got into because the dog ate it before I could investigate. Yesterday they were eating on the carcass from the buck my husband shot. My one hen just loves the fat.

Whoa, what kind of vampire chickens you got there, BBP?

Glad to hear you're keeping your women happy, Bigz.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

It is nice when everyone gets along, isn't it? I like that pic too. They all look so relaxed.
BTW, thank you for the update on Jim. I'm very relieved to hear he & his family are all safe and sound.

Funny how everyone has been talking about it recently; I just got an e-mail from Mother Earth News with a very interesting article in it.
The Nutrient Levels In Our Food Are Declining

Thank you, Angie, for the info on Celiac.
Raiq, sorry to hear about your coworker. Hope she is ok. This is the time of year to really be on the alert for them. Do you plan on getting any pear trees? Gurney's has one called Ambrosia that is divine! Huge, sweet fruit that stores for quite a while in the frig & wasn't bothered by bugs (no, they weren't sprayed). My only regret was getting a dwarf instead of a standard. This was only it's 3rd year & it was loaded with pears.
I don't blame you for not letting your dogs loose up there, FT, no matter how much land you own. Lots of big animals up there. I have heard those sneaky lone coyotes will lure a big dog away, only to have their pack attack & kill the dog. Don't know if it's true or not, but I sure wouldn't want to find out either. Our neighbor's dog was mauled by a coyote last summer. Hungry, rabid or stinky animals, a protective momma bear, hunters or just mean people in general are incentive enough for me to keep my animals from running around loose. But that is just me.

Oh, and I forgot other people's loose dogs. My sis has a huge dog & always keeps it on a leash in her yard. Her stupid neighbors do not, so one day their equally stupid dog decided to come into her yard & tease her dog, who is not stupid. She (the dog) stayed way back from the neighbors dog until it got close enough, then she throttled the snot out of him. Terrible, I know, but the dog was in her yard & was barking & harrassing her. And she was on a leash. You just never know when something bad might happen. Being fenced or leashed also has its fair share of hazards, I guess. Her dog could have easily been coyote food on a leash. Ok, I'll stop talking now.

TO, I sure wish you & Carol could work something out with those houses. The one you want sure sounds like a nice one. I agree on the ire about the bait stations. Yet another thing to be tossed into landfills to poison our soil & water supply.
Cind, glad you're feeling a little better. I think FT meant the TV show Dancing with the Stars?

Thanks for the welcome, struggling a little here tonight. DW had a flat on the way home... Now to find 2 tires for the van... One of our bantam cochins went broody after laying a few eggs. A friend brought over 6 eggs for her to sit. Next summer we will have a variety in the coop and the rooster will go to the stew pot.

Thanks again for the well wishes.
